I've had a fantastic peppered cory in my 22g for about a month now- today i cleaned my filter (no water change, last done 30% 2 days ago), shortly afterwards i found him/her? floating upside down at the top of the tank. thinkiking it was dead i got my net out... which caused the fish to swim away. However, moments later he was upside down again at the top of the tank.

i did notice some red patchy spots in the middle of his underside, and what im guessing is his anus is also red. im trying to get a picture now.

Please help!

i have another smaller cory in the tank, who seems fine at the moment.
lso in there are : 7 Guppies (2m 5f) 5 platys (2m 3f) 4 black neons 1 regular neon tetra, 1 kuhli loach and another loach thats just plain brown.
Also a couple of random snails.

a better picture.

Ive put him in a 1/2 gallon tub in the tank, as i dont have another tank.

the little fella is my favourite fish, usually swimming about all over the place.

whilst i remember, i feed him catfish pellets, clean the gravel onca a week, water changes evert 3-4 days (dechlorinated, of course).

water is at 24C

Can anybody help?!?!

He looks to be bloated and with those red marks I'm wondering if he is suffering from a bacterial infection. Does he appear to be bloated to you as well or does he always look that fat?

yeah, he lokoks bloated, especially down one side.

just been to my lfs, they told me i should just write him off :-(

well i think i found the cause of the problem.....

when i setup my tank i had a bunch of neon tetra (my lfs said they were a hardy fish, ideal for new tanks.... yeah right) and most of them died over the first few weeks- i thought i had rid of all of the bodies.....

Tangled up in one of my plants i found a decomposed neon tetra corpse... the same plant my cory had benn feasting on for the past week or so. my guess is it wasnt the plant he was eating.

Knowing this is there anything i can do to improve his chances?

Since i put him in the 1/2g tub hes stopped floating and his swelling has gone down.

im giving him fresh water from the tank every couple of hours (disposing of what he has been in)

Does anyone think he has a hope? i wont give up!

First line of defense is clean, clean water! Especially if there was a decaying fish in the tank.

yep, as soon as i saw it id did a 50% change, gonna do another later today, 50% again? or would that stress the fish?

Well, the cory lasted the night in the 1/2 gallon bath, and hes still breathing.

The redness from his belly has gone, its more a light brown patch now, and the crimson anus is also brown now.

Hes stopped flosting too, although he is lying on his at the bottom of the container.

4Im still giving him fresh tank water every few hours, fingers crossed eh.
