I have been trying to find at least a 55G for my pleco. I am thinking about just going to Petco and buying a brand new one but won't be able to do so for a few weeks. I really need to get him out of my 20G asap due to him pushing around all the substrate. I am so afraid hes going to bury one of my frogs, snails, or cories. Would it be ok to put him into a 10G for a couple of weeks as long as he was all buy himself? It would only be for 3 weeks MAX hopefully sooner if I can find a used 55G. While hes in the 10, I will spoil him like crazy. Lots and lots and lots of his fave veggies and fruits. I think he would be happier by himself.
Thanks!

How big is he?

Between 5 and 6 inches guesstimating.

I'd leave him in the 20 and live with the substrate relocating...

If it's a matter of cost there are pretty readily available 55g setups on craigslist. If at all possible, you'd be better off relocating the tanks other inhabitants as they won't be bothered in a small tank with frequent maintenance as the pleco will. Good luck! :perv:

If he needs to be out of the 20, so get a rubbermade tub. You can get one that is larger than a 10 gal or a large cooler and use a sponge type filter. It won't be ideal, but at least he will have enough room until you can find a 55 gal tank for him.

:iagree:

Saying that "55 gallon set ups are readily available on Craigslist" is a HUGE generalization. I have not seen a 55 gallon for sale on my local CL for 6 months. Different areas have different turnovers for different things.

50 gallon Rubbermaid or Sterilite tubs can usually be found for less than $20, and 30 gallon tubs are even cheaper. If you have a cycled HOB that you can throw on it, that would be great, if not, lots of water changes to keep the water pristine. A sponge filter would be adequate as long as you do the water changes.

The sterilite containers are really pretty good for a temporary tank. I have my occupants in one, temporarily, that I've calculated to be holding around 18 gallons. I have two HOBs on it and a stealth 50watt that is keeping it at 78 degrees. It's translucent so I can see in the tank very well.

Thanks! I may try the tub thing. I am going to hold out for a few more days. Work has been so slow the pass week so I don't have much cash at all. I am going to try to get him at least a 30 within the next week or so, and then I will upgrade it to a 55G until he outgrows that lol.

Wish our tubs were that cheap! Yes, the tub idea is the your cheapest quick fix. CL 55's here are way over-priced. They are plentiful because ppl ask too much for them. No way would I pay the asking price for them. I doubt I would even pay 1/2 of the asking price!
