*HELP* DISCUS sitting on tank bottom

:mwave::mwave:

that is great news keep up with what you are doing. As it is said with aquariums nothing good happens quickly. But when it does it feels so good.

:thm::thm:

bs6749 since this thread is centered on reports re these discus I do not feel it should stray off topic (a bit since the intitial thread does not mention ich).

but please feel free to post your own discussion re: salt and other treatments and your thoughts.

;)

Nothing new to report - They all seem to look a little better today than yesterday so I guess we are getting a little better each day! YAY!!!!!!!!

Good and Bad

O there is News - I just logged on to give you all a report.

OK. whats good is - there colors are looking great - they are getting more active and Most arent showing any bad sighns.

The Big Turk Is looking good acting better - seems more at ease and I think he is starting to eat a bit.

The 2 Big melons - one is out and the other is hiding. The one that is hiding is not Hungry but he looks ok and seems ok as far as I can tell.
The Smaller BIG melon is out eating and doing well - not eating like last week but eating.

Then there were the 2 Big Snakes - The smaller of the 2 looks better than all the others eats well Looks well and act normal!
The Larger Snake is still my problem fish. He is starting to eat more and more and he IS Hungry!!!! The Problem is he is showing problem's.
He is the only fish swimming with one fin clamped ALSO - I noticed today (for the first time) That he is breathing hard out of one side of his gills and the other is not moving much. His colors look super and he is acting so much better - outgoing, swimming around and eating great! SHould I try to do anything or just watch and see how it goes. I am going to do another 50% water change tomarow or at least that was my plan.

WHAT do you guys think?????

Thanks, Arkangel77

I would if you can move him to his own tank for two or three days and add some aquarium salt. That should help him out and speed his recovery.

I say move him so you don't have to treat the whole 180 with salt and salt and plant don't mix.

on a side note:

I have one question for you. I just saw your pic of the 180 very nice. The wall you have is that just stone epoxied together or siliconed or something else?

How much salt? Would my 10 gallon work? How should I handle it?

As for the stone, that's sandstone from H.D. That I cut with a tile saw. I siliconed it in place to make the deep planting area. Thanks for all the help.

It sounds like your guy most likely has a fluke problem. Further back I had mentioned that clamping one fin to the side IME has been the very first sign of flukes. That gets followed by using one gill. While always present in a tank, Flukes can attack a fish when its been stressed. Without a scope it can't be diagnosed exactly, but the symptoms say flukes to me. If none of your others are exhibiting the same one gill usage, I'd remove him -- your 10 gal. may be fine -- but you will have to closely monitor your water and do frequent WCs if he is larger.

Do you have Hikari Prazi Pro on hand? I'd start with that, its specifically for gill flukes and also treats certain types of worms. Its also very gentle on fish and does not impact your bio filter. Note that Prazi Pro is sometimes ineffective these days though, as flukes are becoming resistant to it. But first time usage, it should do the job, as long as treatment is for a long enough period of time to kill all emerging hatches from eggs. Another treatment for flukes is pure Praziquantel powder, more potent that Prazi Pro, but also a PITA to mix. It can be purchased at www.jehmco.com for a decent price, and if I remember correctly, many people mix it with Vodka. :eek: But the Discus don't get drunk! I've never used it myself.

If you don't have Prazi, you can try Quick Cure, which can eradicate flukes if the infestation is light. If you use QC, make sure to increase aeration in the tank.

And, as always, monitor your water quality. Do you have Prime or its equivalent on hand? You may need it to detoxify ammonia/nitrite in the QT.
