I have barbs, and guppies in other tanks, so I don't want anymore of them. I am not looking for anymore live bearers. I am looking for fish with personality, who may also appreciate a live guppy or two as an occasional treat. I am hoping to find fish that have blue, yellow, purple, and or red coloring. I have had rams in the past, and have been unable to find a reliable source of stock, so I will not be getting rams. I was thinking of cichlids, but I am not limited to them as I understand 29 gallons is a bit small to keep many cichlids happy. Anybody have suggestions. I am in no hurry to stock the tank, as it does have some fish in it now. (1 female GBR, and 6 fancy tailed guppy fry) The tank is planted so the fish will need to be one that likes plants, but doesn't eat them or dig them up. I posted in the cichlid forum, and have not had many responses, so I am hoping opening up the field may give me more responses.

Well, I have a betta in my 29, which give you lots of color options. I also have cardinal tetras (which I think are prettier than neons :p) and a school of every color of danio, including glofish. So there's a lot of mid/top level color for sure. I also have cories and kuhlis for the bottom.

Keep looking for cichlids if you do want something different. I have had 5 to 7 Saulosi for quite a few years in my 29, and they are a great change of pace from my big planted community tank.

Is your 29 gallon planted? Do they eat plants? I have rocks I can add to the tank to give them caves, but I am hoping to keep the majority of the tank planted. How many male/female do you keep?

African cichlids and planted tanks do not always go hand in hand. It can work but I wouldn't trust it. Plus, they would not work with the current stock.

Try praecox rainbows for the red/blue.
The current stock would be rehomed before the restocking. The rainbows would just ablut max out the tank to have a school of 6. I don't think I want to limit myself to a school of fish with one showpiece fish.

I gues I should clarify my search as there are so many to chose from. I have done the liver bearers, and I have barbs. I am not looking for schooling fish as that would severly limit the additional fish I could keep. I may consider some dwarf corries, but have never gotten them to do much but sit on the bottom waiting for the next feeding.
