2 oranda in a 1 gallon!!!

ugh i went to pet. smart today and this girl was buying a tiny little one gallon which could only possibly hold a betta (although id never go that small) comfortably plus 2 baby orandas! I almost didnt say anything but felt like i should.

I told her that there is no way that these fish would be ok in that tiny tank and they would need to be upgraded to a much bigger tank very soon. She said why and i said they get huge and just ammonia that will accumulate in that tank ...shed have to change it every hour or more lol

she just basically smirked and kept saying hi to her fish which will be dead in one week

another thing that agitates me is that the tank itself showed a pic of a goldfish in that particular tank! that should be against the law

I used to work at a Petsmart and there was no end to the people that wanted goldfish in tiny little tanks or "goldfish bowls." Fortunately our store trained us to refuse sale to anyone not meeting minimum requirements. We said no to lots of people.

I go though this all the time at work as well. I work for Petco and one of my biggest complaints to the tank manufactures are the packing on the fish tanks. They market them all to goldfish owners.

I've had one women who asked about the guarantees on our fish I told her 15 days, that she had to bring the fish back and a water sample in a separate bag. She said that she had one that last a little over that and they should last a lot longer I agreed and then asked her what size was her tank. She got very mad at me and said that she had been keeping goldfish for 30 years. Again I asked what size tank and she said that she had kept them in a bowl and that they were just fine. I asked how long the longest had ever lived and she said 2 years and that is fine with her when I tried to explain the size they get to and that they need a large tank. She got really mad and walked out later I found out that some else had told her that as well.

PS off to work to deal with more people like this.. I do have some awesome customers but some really try my patients.

It's good to hear that some of these "major" pet stores are taking some initiative. I find it very upsetting that people don't view fish as long term pets and instead see them as only temporary or as something to "teach responsibility".

Some of the "care sheets" provided by stores do mention the tank and health requirements, but I think more of a push is needed by the sales associates and manufacturers provide the needed care... Especially when they could heavily capitalize on the extra equipment they would sell!

We just had our annual town celebration and of course there were goldfish being given out as prizes. And they were big, about 2-3 inches long. They were prepackaged in plastic bags and stored in a big garbage can all bagged up. It was very sad. Lots of kids walking around with fish in bags. Twirling the bags, swinging the bags, etc. It made me so sad. I couldn't even save one as I don't have the proper setup for them. But I was smart enough to know that. I just hope some of those poor fish got to people who knew what they were doing.

I witnessed this happen at my petsmart today actually. I was just browsing around the fish when a woman came up to one of the workers who was changing the water. She asked, "Can I get a goldfish to put into a fishbowl?". The worker just turned around and had like the most evilest glare ever. He said "You can...if you want to kill him in the next 2 weeks that is." The womans face just dropped. "What? But people always have goldfish in bowls. When I was 8 years old I had a goldfish in a bowl." At this point the worker was getting pretty annoyed and replied "Goldfish can live 15-20 years. If you had a goldfish in a bowl, it may have been only for a month." And then he turned back to his work. The woman was speechless and I saw her go over to ANOTHER worker to try her luck Silly lady doesn't know that all of the petsmart employees are educated.

I was pretty happy he held up an aurgement in the end and didn't give in and give her a goldfish.
