2 oranda in a 1 gallon!!!

I used to work at a Petsmart and there was no end to the people that wanted goldfish in tiny little tanks or "goldfish bowls." Fortunately our store trained us to refuse sale to anyone not meeting minimum requirements. We said no to lots of people.
Wow thats good...atleast one store.

It's truly sad to see these kind of things happen but yet I see it all the time. I work for Petco as many else of you might. We are trained to talk people out of these situations and do everything we can to get them into betta's instead of goldfish in bowls. (Though i really dont like that idea a whole lot either, its a decent out.) Most of the time, I am able to turn people away but every now and then, you get that one customer that just insists (and thinks that they know way more than you) that you sell the fish to them. So I have to sell it, but I am able to revoke the guarantee on the fish so they cannot replace it if it dies. Works out well because a lot of the time the people come back all surprised and say "Well it just died, can I get a replacement?" I just look at them and give them a big told you so and say NO. People will learn eventually after they start losing money. Until that day, there still will be goldfish in bowls, oscars in 20 gallons, and plecos in 10 gallons. Sad, but it happens.

**Just a note, even if you're not an employee and you see these situations, speak up, it helps everyone out

Hi I am new here.

The same happened to us yesterday. Our 20 gal on a marineland 150 w/a bio wheel and a rugf just completed the fishless cycle. Besides needlessly cruelty to the fish that start the cycle, my kids don't get attached and cry when the those fish die.

Anyway, we got a small/medium sized red oranda at Petsmart and right before the person scooped it up she asked what set up we had. I told her and she told me that that was fine for the size. Of course when it gets bigger we plan on upgrading to a larger size tank.

I do agree with the deceptive packaging tanks have. They should be noted on the outside how many fish and what kind of fish that size can support.

I remember I was at a Petsmart once and this wedding planner came in and said that they were going to buy 50 Fancy Goldfish and put them in those small glass vase for the table centerpiece.:( The Petsmarts and Petcos here aren't the best and all they focus on are sales.

I was at Meijer and this man was showing his son the fish. They had the tattooed Balloon Molly's and the dye injected tetras. I told them how they get the fish that color and that it wasn't humane, that it should be illegal and was able to turn them away. It made me happy that they cared enough to not buy them.

I recently bought a new 16G that I needed really quickly as a hospital tank and it had a recommended stocking on it, which I thought was really good. I then noticed they were recommending two orandas, two fantails and one comet. The only way to do it is to educate the consumer, cos the supplier doesn't care.

And welcome to AC! :welcome:

Glad you found this site. We have a wonderful array of members who specialize in various fields particularly coldwater. Hopefully you will learn a lot here.

It's really unfortunate but scenarios like the one you just encountered, do happen.

Just went to Petsmart to look at their live plants and this guy was soo annoying. He kept asking what other types (sharks, semi-aggressive, tropical) could he do with golds. The employee was a saint and kept explaining that he can't and what kinds of fish can be stocked to together. He just refused to understand and she just had to keep telling him no and why.

Work at a Petsmart as well. The worst is during the Persian new year. We literally have a line out the door for a week straight and every customer wants to buy 20 comet/commons to put into a bowl. I don't even want to get into the tedium of the conversations I have with them, but it's enough to drive you mad.
I also enjoy going to the fair and spending as much money as it takes to win the "goldfish" (koi). Think I spent 40$ for a single koi last year. I need to stop drinking before I play lol :P
