I follow a routine quarantine proceedure for all new comers. I use a 16 L (4 gal) tank as my quarantine tank. It has a 50w heater (77*-78*) and an underground filter, 2 inches of gravel plus an air stone. I add sea salt to 15ml/4L ( by adding 5ml/4L every 12+hrs x 3). Total quarantine time lasts 10 days. With a day or 2 remaining I reduse the salt by doing a 33% water change (total salt remaining is 10ml/4L) followed 12+ hrs later by a 50% WC (5ml/4L remaining) . 12+ hrs later I add the fish to my main tank (55 gal). After removing the fish from the quarantine tank I do a 100% WC and add a few snails and leave it ready for the next new comers or fish requiring isolation.
This proceedure insures no Ich enters my main tank as well as some other diseases and most parasites and unwanted snails. You cannot use this proceedure on all fish (like catfish, plecos and fine/no scale fish, snails, etc). There are some exceptions and less salt may be required.
What proceedures do you use to quarantine new arrivals? Do you use any meds? If so what are you targeting? How long is your usual quarantine period? At what temp?
I think this info may be of interest to all.
