just picked up a new bottle of calcium pills to be crushed up and added to snail jello recipe. the last bottle i had contained vitamin D along with the calcium and i was told this was not the best for my briggs. i'm going to list all the ingredients on the new bottle and if you could please tell me if anything listed is going to be harmful, thanks!

front label of the bottle says: Calcium Carbonate, 500 mg. no preservatives, no artificial flavour, no gluten or yeast, no sugar, lactose free.

here is the information from the bottle:

Each caplet containss: 1250 mg of Calcium Carbonate (from oyster shell), providing 500 mg (25 mEq) of elemental Calcium.
Non-medicinal ingredients: (in descending order): Microcrystalline Cellulose, Sodium Starch Glycolate, Monoester of Propylene Glycol and Glycerol, Magnesium Stearate, Crospovidone, Stearic Acid, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Partially Hydrolyzed Polyvinyl Alchohol, Talc, Titanium Dioxyde, Polyethylene Glycol, Soya Lecithin, D&C Yellow No. 6 Aluminium Lake and Carnauba Wax.

also, is there any such thing as a snail getting too much calcium? i tend to put a lot in my snello, lol.

I do not believe I have seen snails suffering overdose from calcium nor was there a record of such thing. I don't think this is an issue. I have added over 4000mg calcium carbonate on my large gel food recipe before and my snails were not affected at all.

Almost all ingredients listed are found similarly in Tums and Caltrate lumped together except for sodium starch glycolate, monoester of propylene glycol and glycerol, and carnauba wax. I don't believe they would harm the snails. Can't see that happening especially as they don't make up most of the portion of the tablet. Carnauba wax is natural and often combined with beeswax. Mmmm...Honey.

I love honey taste so good. You know what honey is though right??? lol sorry for side tracking.

Weird so in this case with a calacium diet to much of a good thing isnt bad. Guess there is an exception to every rule.

Saw a documentary on bees and how honey is made so now when people eat honey I say you know what honey is and most say no I procede to tell them its bee throwup and they stop eating then I poor me some honey and say it taste really good though huh lol.

Sorry BFM for the off topic discussion lol. Its amazing how much you care bout your snails and fish.

they are my finkids and shellkids after all! gotta treat them right! just finished making two batches of snello, butternut squash and carrot, with nls pellets, mysis shrimp, and algae wafers mixed in, along with some of the calcium pills (which were an absolute pain to grind down! lol), and a few tums for good measure. the snails eat better than i do! lol.

as for the honey and what it is, lol, i gotta say that next time i'm in starbucks and i see someone putting honey in their tea! hahahaha!

LOL let people drink there tea in peace lol.

How did you crush them??? Next time try a meat tenderizer or hammer rap the pill in a paper towel and wack away. One smashed into smaller chunks those should be easier to grind down to a sutible size.

Beer and wine are yeast urine, and cheese is bacteria poo. If it tastes good eat it! Sorry for the sidetrack!

i used a small ceramic souffle cup thing and a ceramic coffee cup bottom as my mortar and pestle. don't have a meat tenderizer and didn't think of the hammer idea. thanks!
