My Dad Is Cheap

My first 'real' tank is my 46 gallon. I've had it since I was 14 and I love it still.

If you do decide to get heavy into the hobby, then eventually you'll go the planted tank route. If you do this, it's a lot of money to have a big tank with plants. I suggest going for something in the 20 (long) - 55 gallon range.

Good luck, and remember, people here can be very snippy at new comers. Not on purpose though, most don't know how harsh they sound over the internet.

Also, let people know you are looking for a larger tank. You will be amazed how many people have fish tanks in storage that are just taking up space.

I have been given several fish tanks, even a 40 gal breeder. I have also given lots of stuff away. I try to give stuff to friends and family before selling it on criagslist. Besides my first two tanks (which I no longer have), I have gotten them all used. Of the tanks I currently have set up, all were used, the 200 came from a resturant that a friend of mine saw that was not set up and he asked if it was for sale, the store owner was frusterated with the tank and sold it all, the 120 came from a call out of a blue from a women I knew whose new boyfriend had the tank in his garage. The 60 and 46 came from craigslist, complete and like new for under $100 each.

You might find a larger tank in a place you would not expect. I also agree that larger is easier and more enjoyable.

larger tanks are easy to care for, true. But, as noted, they are also much more expensive to maintain in the long run AND much harder to move when the time comes to move to your own apartment/college/dorm, etc. The suggestions of medium sized tanks is right on... I am just a bit older than 14 (by a couple of decades!) but we have a 29 gallon that is perfect. Large enough to be stable waterwise but small enough that the costs of filters, substrate and the ever present "gottahaveits" isn't too much.

Craigslist is full of good deals. YOu will find one that suits you. Good luck to ya... (and, just FYI, saltwater tanks are even cooler, lol. Just joking everyone).

Thanks everyone.

I put a wanted ad on Craigslist, and got two really great deals. I have to turn one of them down, seeing as it's a saltwater aquarium set up. But I found a really nice 45 gallon set up for under $50 dollars. I'm going to go look at it Saturday.

good, I'm glad that you found a good deal on a fairly different tank size.

Yeah, and since it's local, my dad doesn't have to be involved at all. And with such a good price, I can buy it all myself. I just hope the man will help me lift it into the car.

a 45g is not heavy so it shouldn' be too bad ... you should have seen me and one of my freinds trying to lug a 180g into a dodge neon lol
