Can someone explain to me why Flowerhorns have a huge growth on their foreheads? I think they look deformed.

Most cichlids exhibit a nuchal hump in adult males although in most true species it isn't as pronounced. Flowerhorns are mutts, bred for specific traits, one of which is a large nuchal hump.

Does the hump serve any real purpose other than maybe attracting a mate?

I think its true purpose is for when Its mating time they use that fat reserve in there head while there not eating due to defending there you. At least that would be my guess.

That would make sense. :) Thanks for the info peeps. :D

the hump is also reminiscent of some chinese god of wealth or something, so it brings money into the house, which in turn brings bigger tanks and more food. score!

Hah! If that were the case, I would make one entire room into an aquarium and stock it full of money bringers...lol.

I'm an Asian but unlike most Asians in neighboring Asian countries, I do not believe in superstitions. Yes, arowana, flowerhorns and goldfish apparently bring good luck, wealth and prosperity but I never really believe those stuff at all.

The nuchal hump is also called kok. It's simply a reserve of fatty deposits as Ger correctly stated.

A deposit of fatty tissue that's used to attract mate? In humans it's the female that uses that trick!
