Not trying to be ghoulish or anything... but I'd like to offer a suggestion (and everyone feel free to discuss the merits). It's difficult to take clear photos of symptomatic areas when sick fish are alive and swimming through the water. So I think it would be helpful if people whose sick fish have died could take post mortem photos of the whole fish (for context) and the specific visible symptom (for detail) and then post them in the diseases and illnesses thread. That way there would be a photographic library people could look through and be able to point to and say "This looks like what's going on with my fish." Or other people could go through and say "This looks like x, y, or z disease."
I just think it would aid diagnosis. Thoughts?

Your idea has merit. There are some diseases and conditions that require a living host and when the host is no longer viable it ceases as well. Freezing them will also ruin some symptoms.

I personally don't know which do what as I have only recently begun to study some of these conditions.

You are right in the what and why. I just wonder if it would be too graphic for some? I would like to see these too.

They could also get pictures of the fish while it was alive if they knew what it had.. that would lessen the graphicness a bit. Of course there will have to be a few dead fish pictures but people will be fine with looking at them if they're fish is sick and they want to know what's wrong (hopefully).

much agreed... googling like a madman can be very frustrating when you're looking for answers. you could go through the rigmarole of taking pics, uploading and waiting for answers. then it's all up to who sees your thread in time and that doesn't always work. too many variables. the one person who has seen exactly what you're going through may not get to your thread in time. your pics might not be great and hard to pin point what the actual problem is. a lot of times fish are dead before you get the answer you're looking for.

death/disease picture thread is a great idea... stickied and complete as possible is even better.

I also think it's an excellant idea and would be very helpful to people trying to diagnose their fishes symptoms which is soooo difficult and frustrating and futile...at times..

The trouble is the sticky thread lacks photos in some sections so it would be appreciated if somebody has time to take post mortem photos, not just ones while they were still alive. Necropsy and such also helps although I know one site that already recorded it but it's not strictly tropical and mostly coldwater unfortunately. I may talk to another member here of magnification images on aeromonas/pseudomonas infections.

Oh yes, that I saw, and I've used it myself. It's very helpful. But the point I was making was that it's easier to take clear, crisp, detailed photos of a disease condition when the fish is dead and out of the water, than it is a live fish. It seems that fish aren't very cooperative when it comes to being photographed, especially when it's some small spot or patch that you'd like to be able to get a clear photo of to aid in helping others help you make a diagnosis.

If I have the time, I might as well ask the store for some dead fish and do necropsy for the database here but there's no telling how long they had been dead which is the downside. I do have the necessary tools here for the necropsy that I can borrow from my sister. Not sure yet when I can do this with my time stockpiling but maybe if others can, please go ahead as the photos will be beneficial later on.:thumbsup:
