Hi all,

I would very much appreciate your feedback.

Went to my local Petsmart today and saw a 29 Gallon for $90, price includes a full-size hood (cover, lamp, bulb). Also saw a stand for the 29 for $134. All told it would be $224 plus PA tax gives a grand total of call it $240.

Good deal or not?

Not really...
At Wally-world, they have a 29g kit w/filter, heater, hood, & bulb for about the same price as just the tank/hood/bulb @ petsmart. I got my starter kit for about $75.

MTiff- I'm also in Philly, and CL has set ups that are spectacular for far less than that. I would shop around, too.

CL? Not familiar with the abbreviation.

CL = Craigslist

A good rule of thumb would be $2 or less per gallon new for glass tanks. So a 29G should be about $60 new, for just the tank.

For used tanks off Craigslist, $1 per gallon or less is fair. A used glass 29G should really only go for about $20 for a good deal, and that would be in very good condition with no cracks, mineral deposits on the glass, or big scratches.

The hood, heater, filter, etc. that come in package deals can be pretty good quality, but it might be worth reading some brand reviews and buying those separately.

Definitely, the pre-packaged filters tend to lag in quality. They can be adequate, but it's like, why not shop a little, spend a few more dollars, and get a really good filter instead of something that is just adequate?

Just as an example, for the money, you could get a plastic hood and some low-end bulbs in the package, or . . . buy an inexpensive lamp from Target or Wal-Mart, a higher-rated flourescent bulb, and a timer, and have custom lighting that would look a little nicer and give more light.

Same thing for the stand . . . don't buy a stand from the stores. They're just really cheaply made, priced way too high, and not that great. It would be better to shop around for a sturdy used dresser or make a stand yourself.

Yes, In Philly you should find a good deal with a little patience. Put 'aquarium' or 'fish' in the seach box for the category 'all for sale or wanted'.

personally i would stay away from local shops such as petsmarts, petco's etc....only because they jack up the price. unless they have some kind of clearance sale or whatever. your best bet is craiglist as some said. sometimes you can get tanks and stuff for free on there. just keep checking everyday and you will find great deals on there. good luck!
