You're correct, the smaller diameter bulbs are more effecient and powerful.
@Rod, if this just for fish only tanks, goto home depot or lowes, they both sell a lot of T8/12 bulbs in different Kelvin temperatures and even older LFS sell Coralife bulbs that were around $7-8 that make fish color looks really good. And btw, the 40watt T12 put out less light than a 32watt T8.
These guys seem to have a better price. As far as bulb T-types they are all florescent and will work in any fixture for the specific size, all the T-number is just the spectrum of light the bulb was designed to emits weather for plants, black lights, or UV sterilization, no big deal there. I would try and find one used for $5. http://www.catalinaaquarium.com/product_info.php?cPath=71_72&products_id=1223
actually the k rating is a heat rating(measured in Kelvins)
more often you should seek daylight bulbs with K rating of 5000 -10000.
the daylight is the actual range of colors..daylight a mix to achieve full spectrum light.
Oh OK. I actually put a fat 24" into one of those $9 under desk "Lights of America" brand fixtures that come with the skinny bulb. The fat 24" "plant grow" bulb from Lowes has been working for 3 month now. Rather then a 48" I just prefer to use 2-24" fixtures on my 125 tank canopy. Those 48" are too long and with two 24" fixtures you can turn off one side off for fish preference of light or darkness when first turning on the lights less shock.
