Big Box LFS

curious why its a liability issue when its clearly the user/member stating their opinions,

what happened to freedom of speech though I don't think AC should be held responsible for what their member has stated about the store- as it's an opinion forum in the first place as this site is riddled with opinions. Then we gotta censor the heck out of everything?

I understand illegal activities are not condoned, but what happened to opinions and freedom of speech though.

This is not a public forum, its a registration member based forum ( remember, you signed up? ) hence its down to the members and staff to respect what the administration request..So, yes, you could say freedom of speech is limited, but thats soley to protect the site administration who "owns" the forum....

Store bashing is not allowed, as its not the members who bear the brunt of anything when the store itself comes on to the forum and lodges a complaint, which has happened in the past. This action is what lead to Aquariacentral.com not allowing store bashing..

If you have the "proof" you say, then take it up with the store directly or the respective animal welfare groups, and not use Aquariacentral.com as a means to bash the stores name and reputation.

Lets leave this aspect of this topic now, and keep to the topic at hand.

Thanks in advance.

There will always be these kinds of posts, stores that do not know how to take care of fish. Posting here will do little to help the fish. If you had billions of dollars to buy all the fish to "save" them, the store would buy more and do the same thing. The only way to help would be to write a government office and ask for action. IF enough people do, something might happen. Then people would have to buy at LFS shops, and prices would rise due to lack of compitition. Then those who get fish at boxstoreWorldofCheapfIsh would not seek help on the forums, etcetera etcetera. BEtter to write the store, ask for a manager or get a job there to help out. You have to realise that some fish will die in the trades.

As for legality, there is no law against saying anything here, buit that does not mean what you say does not carry a penalty. I could say I am going to do X to Y person and be arrested for a threat. Technically the courts oppinion as of now holds the poster, and not the forum or it's owner liable, but the law is fluid, and I would hate to see AC be the new example.

No Names will be used - end of story.

As for your thoughts on freedom of speech, that holds in some countries but not all. There are certain liberties a privately owned forum does not have to grant you. You either accept the rules or you go elsewhere unfortunately. The site owner/owners try to keep as few rules as possible and allow as much freedom as they can but sometimes other rules have to apply for the benefit of all.

Going back a couple of years there was a aquarium site that got bashed on a forum. The store sued on basis of defamation (libel) and for lost business. They were awarded a couple of million dollars in damages and the site was forced to close down.

We share your concerns and are as angry at the offending stores as anyone else might be. Just keep the name out as most of us know well enough when you say Box Store, Corporate Store, or any other euphemism, that way we can continue our small community with no problems...

(It would set fish-keeping back years if this site closed down.)
