When doing a water change, I add the water conditioner to the bucket of water and then pour it into the tank. Should I be adding the correct amount of conditioner for the amount of water in the bucket, or for the total water capacity of the tank? And is the answer different if the tank is a mature, cycled tank or a new, uncycled tank? Finally, if I need to add multiple buckets of water to the tank, do I add conditioner to each bucketfull before pouring into the tank?

Thank you!

If you are adding the conditioner to the new water before it goes in the tank, you add conditioner for that amount of water in the bucket for each bucket. If you are adding conditioner to the tank and then adding water, you need to add enough conditioner for the amount of gallons of your tank. It doesn't matter whether the tank is new or old unless you are adding prime because of an ammonia spike, then you can add up to 5 times the amount of the tank.

If you are doing water changes with a bucket then just add the conditioner into the bucket, with the amount recommended for whatever amount of gallons fit in the bucket.

Dosage only depends on the amount of water you are adding.

If you forget one day to add the conditioner while the water is still in the bucket then add the conditioner to the tank, and the dosage should be for the full tank capacity.

That is fine to do, as long as your are adding the proper amount of conditioner based upon the volume of water in that bucket.
Should I be adding the correct amount of conditioner for the amount of water in the bucket, yes - if you use a 2 gallon bucket dose for 2 gallons of water that is in the bucket or for the total water capacity of the tank? if you are dosing your conditioner into your tank dose for the entire capacity of the tank And is the answer different if the tank is a mature, cycled tank or a new, uncycled tank? no - you alsways will dose conditioner the same Finally, if I need to add multiple buckets of water to the tank, do I add conditioner to each bucketfull before pouring into the tank? yes - based on the volume of water in the bucket

Thank you!

answers above are in red. since you asked several differetn questions it should be rather confusing? lol

easiest method. Take water out of tank. dose conditioner into your tank based on how many gallons of water will actually be in the tank. fill tank

Excellent! So to recap, it appears there are two methods.
  1. If the water I am adding fits in a single bucket, I can add the conditioner to the bucket for the amount of water in the bucket and then pour it in the tank.
  2. If I need to add multiple buckets of water to the tank, I could do it the same as above repeated as many times as necessary, OR I can add conditioner to the tank for the amount of water in the whole tank and then pour the buckets in.
Thanks! I didn't know how fast the conditioner reacts. I never thought that I could add the conditioner to the tank and then start adding more water to it!

Adding to the tank directly, and then pouring unconditioned water into the tank, can be done and often is. However, it does have some risk associated with it. Your fish will be exposed (although, for a very short period) to chlorine. It is highly reccomended to add the conditioner to the bucket, and then add the bucket. Usu. the only reason someone would take that risk is for the ease of adding large volumes of water with a hose.

Most people who add the conditioner directly to the tank are the people that use a python or something similar to fill the tank.

Water Conditioner is safe, so there's no problem in adding more than the recommended. For ex. if you are not sure if your bucket hold 1.5 gallons, or 2 gallons, round up with the condioner.

I always add the conditioner to the bucket, then when I'm done I add a few more drops, just for the lulz.

Yep.

Prime, for example, can be safely dosed up to 5x the recommended amount.
