I posted on a computer forum but no one is replying so here is goes.

Ok so heres the deal. When I unplug any usb device my computer gets bsod. It also gets bsod at random times. (I hope it doesnt right now yikes)... I have a xps 1640 with windows vista 64 bit.

The bsod mssage is

0x0000007e (0xffffffffc0000005, 0xfffff8ooo35d0b81, 0xfffffa60019d9798, 0xfffffa60019d9170)

I tried installing a windows update and first it said "one or more drivers might not be compatible... MSD5M -- Please read Microsoft Knolege Base article 967752". So I figured what the heck... clicked go and... I got bsod =(

Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Go back to the first restore point you can find that is right before this started happening. Big windows updates usually automatically create restore points before installing themselves just for this kind of situation. If the update is what did you wrong, this is what will fix it.

If all else fails you could try to remove the USB Bus driver, and reboot the system.
You might need the OEM disc with the USB Bus driver to reinstall.

Since Vista dropped they don't typically give these out at point of purchase anymore, unfortunetly. Few people use to hold on to them anyway, in my experience. For those of us that knew about and made use of them, however... its utter crap that most manufacturers stopped offering them.

The good news is nowadays just about every manufacturer has a list of downloadable drivers on their website for each and every particular model. Pop yours on the website support area, and you can usually find and download what you need.

Even if the system restore idea I told you to try works, I would take a look at this and see if there are any updated drivers you may not have had, particularly for your USB support.

they release snow leopard tomorrow ;)

i dont know if i can really help much with that problem but my old failsafe to fix windows problems.
unplug anything that is not necessary
run CCleaner to remove all temp files andother junk.
run CCleaner to remove junk from the Registry
Restart 4 times
say a little prayer.

Hmmm... translated from hex that says "Bill Gates is the Lord- worship him or perish..."

Are you detaching your USB devices using the "prescribed manner" - going to the system tray and disabling them before unplugging them.

Most people don't, although you're recommended to. Most people don't... and don't have problems though.

When I've had BSOD problems in the past it always seems to be memory related even when it doesn't at first appear to be linked to memory in any way.

Have you added any new hardware to your machine lately?

No I don't use the "prescribed" mannor, but it shouldnt make a difference on the computer at all. The "suggested" removal is so that your usb stick doesn't lose data.

No new hardware =p.

I think I might boot up from an iso to do a memory diagnostic. Maybe I will even use windows memory diagnostic.

ok do a restore point before the updates.

rule 1 with windows - always stay at least a year behind in their updates, they dont test anything and it takes that long for them to clean everything up

rule2 USB uses power from the computer,,to may usb things plugged in can draw so much power that it will conk out your machine.....

remedies:

1.

after u do that..go to the store and buy some more memory for your computer.....max it out cuz u prolly are maxing out the memory. reason u r getting bsod when u unplug is....u are not doing the remove hardware safely thing....and it overloads the memory OR u r doing it and u ahve so many other things running you are overloading the memory and poof

there is a very easy way to see that u are using to much memory and need ot increase your ram....
when u are on the computer look at the little hard drive light if it flashes a lot it means your ram is hitting capacity and using some of the hard drive to help from time to time...that is not good...
so just take afe bucks go to www.microcenter.com and get yourself some more memory....life will be easier.

also remember downloading music from limewire and 100's of other places, running an IM messenger, playing your tunes, and 2 other things ont he internet requires a lot of memory... the bigger the programs, the fancier the graphics the more space they need,,plus all those little adaware and spywares that end up on no matter what u do....

2. go get a USB outlet that has an ac adapter that comes with it and plug the usb's in that way...including the real cool external hard drive that has 2 usb wires ....that will drain your speed down to nothing on your computer if u plug directly in.

not to brag but in 85% of the cases: peoples computers problems are one of two things: not enough memory...not enough power....which then causes tons more problems and provides me in the summer with a nice fix your puter income :)

The 0x0000007e error itself suggests that there is a driver incompatibility, try safe mode.

Boot up your pc and after the POST screen keep pressing F8, until you get to the boot menu, select safe mode and see if it boots without bsod'ing. If it does, try to run chkdsk in the prompt. Start>Run>type cmd and press enter, in the prompt try chkdsk util with repair or fix switch (could even do both), just type chkdsk /r and/or chkdsk /f, let it run.
