im this close to throwing away this hobby.

Here's my opinion on your situtation. I havent read thru all the pages so if I post somehting that has already been said forgive me.

Adding that much salt in one sitting would be the problem you were having at first. Usually you add salt over the period of a few days, watch the fish and stop or redice if you notice anything.

For the tiger barbs....

I would stop buying them from your supplier. Ask how these fish are collected! A good portion of the time they are collected by cyanide which knocks the fish out which makes it ver easy to capture. This method poisions fish and they dont live very long. Alot of stores buy these fish as they are alot cheaper and more plentiful.

It could even be something in the stores tanks. I also highly reccomend a QT for all new comers, even plants (for snail infestation). This will not only be less stressful, but you can also keep an eye out for disease and treat it in the QT instead of risking your main tank. After a few weeks if the fish look healthy, have a good appetite, transfer them.

A few questions.....

How are you acclimating these new fish?
If you are for how long?
Are you emptying the bag with the LFS's water into your own tank?
What is you PH. Certain fish need a more acidic water and others need softer water.

did a 25 percent water change last night with prime.

the fish are ok, but not great..a couple regular barbs have greyed orange on their fins, so im guessing thats some sort of sign.

the one green barb still loses control, and his top fin has becomed freyed

i got to make a video with my webcam. excuse the horrible quality, so horrible it might not even be very helpful lol

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v664/saoxcore/?action=view&current=Video1.flv

pay attention when the time starts reading 1:15 to about 40...after 40 seconds you might see little more but not much. the main part is at that given time. he seems to be doing better than two days ago, but that video will show a bit how he just goes completely vertical, in this video its only for a few seconds and he bounces back out of his "stage" or "shock" i like to call it, but before he'd just stop all of a sudden, completely vertical, and then float up into the top and then the current from my filter would push him allllll the way down back to the gravel. another thing he'd do is stand in place and shiver/shake, like he was going into shock. sad to see.

watch vid

tiger barbs headstand when trying to rest.. usually it can be seen in the morning when you first look into the tank.
if this fish has been ill..it may need to rest more than others.
other than that the tank is very active..the green barb seems to be active as well.

remember tho that they are notorious for nipping..it is possible at times this green one may be being nipped.. if it is slower , resting etc it may be a more readily available target.

IMHO

I think perhaps you should start a new thread to address the problem with the barbs, it is difficult to follow this one.
I saw your vid and to me looks like a possible swim bladder problem. Did you try peas?

wow that video made me feel a touch of vertigo LOL. from what I saw, it actually looked like normal tiger barb behavior, but a little more extreme. If he's the only one showing this 'odd' behavior right now, maybe you should put him in a hospital tank for now and see if he improves without dealing with all of the pestering that he does in there. Maybe he just had a harder time adjusting to the new tank and hasn't gotten an opportunity to 'rest' with everyone else playing tiger barb tag with him.

also, have you watched the behavior of everyone at night after all the lights have been off and it's sleepy time? it would be interesting to know if there's any difference when EVERYONE is headstanding and chill.

maybe my barb just had a swim bladder problem..hes getting better as each day goes by it seems..but can fish die from it? it just seems the fish had the same symtpoms of this..not able to control, and having buoyancy problems.. hes always chillin alone by himself though..oh well.
