Have eggs, when will they hatch?

My convict laid eggs two days ago now. Both her and her partner are carefully protecting the spot where they are.

My question is how long does it take to have free-swimmers? This is also my females first clutch ever. I have read that sometimes it won't be successful at all the first time around. If anyone could shed some light that would be great.

If you can, check the eggs to see what colors are they. White eggs are unfertilized and yellowish eggs are.


It usually take 3-4 days for eggs to hatch depending on temperatures. It'll take another couple of days after that for the frys to absorb the yolksac before they becoming free swimming.


Some pairs will take a few tries before a successful breeding.

Right now it looks like they are a greyish color with a hint of brown. Is this normal? The eggs are going on day three right now and are fairly small

Sounds like they're good. Usually the parent fishes are pretty good at picking off any white eggs(unfertilized) as those can develope fungus and spread to the good ones.

That would explain why she is constantly looking at the eggs. Every now and then she will pick something off of them, but they do not look like they have fungus or anything. Good to know. I'll keep an update

The night after I posted this, all of the eggs started hatching at once. They are not free swimmers now, but I can see them all wiggling around on the driftwood they call home. I will post some pictures once they are swimming, as I cannot focus in with my camera that well.

sweet my are about 2 and a half months old and the biggest is bout an inch almost!!
