Contamination question

I'm currently cycling my tank using raw shrimp, and because they start to smell after a couple days I switch out the gross shrimp for a fresh one. Last time after I had fished the old shrimp out with my net and replaced it with a new one, my net fell in the sink when I was washing my hands and got soap all over it. I have heard that for example, if you wash your tank itself with soap, you can never put fish it in because it will be contaminated.

Is the net still usable? Is it usable for raw shrimp but not for future fish? Should I replace it? Is there a way to make sure all of the soap is gone?

Thanks!

I would assume that if you rinse it really well that it should be fine. I have washed my hands and then placed them in the tank shortly after (mind you I made sure all the soap was off) and everything is fine.

Rinse it well and it will not be a problem. You do know by changing the shrimp you are restarting the release of ammonia as you have to wait for the new shrimp to start decaying. Put the shrimp in a clean stocking and you will not have to look at it and it will be easy to remove.

i was going to say the same thing....

Thanks for the responses! I heard that switching the shrimp out may not be the best method but my roommates complained about the smell, so I figured it was the best option. I'm currently in the nitrite spike stage of cycling, with ammonia reading 0ppm, so I figured that staggering the release of ammonia wasn't too much of a problem (I could be wrong, of course).

The stocking sounds like a great idea! It gets pretty annoying having to fish it out all the time.
