Can anyone tell me how to set up a in canopy light system? I have 125g tank that will be planted so I need to have a enough watts to support my plants. I do inject CO2 to help with growth and to help with algae control.

the 96 watt kit will be your friend.

well, ahsupply is generally pretty economical.

How deep is your tank from front to back?

You could always try some $9 2x40 watt shop lights, though with the depth of your tank that could be an issue.

The tank is 24 inches deep.

You can do shoplights, however if you unlucky like me one of the ballast will burn out with the high humidity.

If you want to get light over you tank for cheap I would recommend picking up some ceramic sockets and installing CFL's over the tank. Your can get a lot of light over a small space using them. I'd install 8-10 23W bulbs over the tank. The wiring is not too difficult to do. For a reflector I'd just paint the top of the hood white.

or you can do sho cfl if the cfl doesn't penetrate enough.

the bulbs can be a little pricey though.

also the shoplight shouldn't be too bad if you toss in a glass top and vents and/or an exhaust fan.

After talking with the wife I think we are just going to go with the set up from ahsupply.com. Now the next question is would two of the 96w be over kill for the tank.

that would be a matter of what you are trying to grow. 2x96 would equal 192/125= 1.5 watts per gallon basically. You could grow some plants good. Growth would be slow but manageable. A tip from self experience, make sure the lights are close enough together that all the light goes in the tank.

I really don't have much experience with a tank of that size. There are some things on here from plantbrain talking about growing plants in low light. do a search and see what he has to say on it.

sounds like a good solution for a low-med light tank to me.

keep in mind i don't have a 125 gallon so i have no idea how that light will penetrate as that tank's kinda tall. this should only be an issue if you want a nice carpet although i suspect it shouldn't be too much of an issue if you choose your plants wisely.

i wouldn't want high light on a tank that large myself. i think i'd be kicking myself in the arse if i went overboard as it'd be a whole lot of trimming and such constantly. it would use up a lot of co2 and ferts if you went overboard too.
