hi guys im new to this site and i thought i would make an account to ask a few questions,

i got my 30g tank set up with gravel/sand, rocks, and atrificial plants

i want it to be a cichlid type of tank but i just dont know how many of these fishes to put in a 30g tank

here are the fishes that i want to put in there,

1 Green Terror
3 Convicts Or firemouth ??
4 African cichlids/Mbuna's
1 red tail black shark

my tank has 4 hiding spots i made with the rocks, i made them look like small caves and also has a plant pot upsidedown so its like a little cave too and i left swimming space at the front of the tank and at the top too, please let me know if those fishes would get along well and good for a 30 gallon tank thanks =]

First of all welcome to AC!

First off it's good your researching before buying your fish because that is way too much stock for a 30 gal tank. A lot of the other people can give you stocking suggestions for a 30 gal but off hand I don't think a green terror will do well in a 30 gal tank. They are very aggressive and get up to 12" long.

I'd suggest looking into the dwarf cichlids for a 30 gal tank.

German Blue Rams, Cockatoo cichlids or a pair of convict cichlids might work.

I'm sure someone else will have some good suggestions.

ok i guess ill take the green terror out of the frame,
now im left with

4 african cichlids,
3 convicts or should i get firemouths?
1 red tail shark...

anything else i can add in there?
or any suggestions...

i want them all to get along and stuff :x

Welcome to AC! :D Anyway, green terrors and red-tail black sharks would not work for this tank as the red tail black shark requires swimming room and the green terror grows too large. If you are into Africans I would go with small Tanganyikan cichlids. Other cichlids suitable for a 30 gal. tank are convict cichlids, south american dwarf cichlids (all types), and some Congo rapid cichlids like dwarf humpheads. These are all neat but convict cichlids will destroy your display so if you want a display with beautiful plastic plants then they will wreck it :) .

All right. Considering what you want I have put together a couple stock lists:
Stock list 1: Checkered Julie pair
Stock List 2: Many-Banded Shell Dweller Colony and a hard-water shoaler such as platies
Stock List 3: Convict Cichlid pair
I reccomend stock list two.

Oh yeah I should've added that generally it's good to set up your tank either for african cichlids or South American/Central American cichlids as they need very different water conditions. Africans like a ph up to 8 or higher while SA/CA cichlids generally like a ph of 7.5 or lower.

Convicts and firemouths are both SA/CA cichlids.

Also are you familiar with the nitrogen cycle and properly cycling new tanks before adding fish? If not read about it here: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84598

i know convicts like to dig and stuff and im ok with that its the fishes natural instinct to do so, but im still undecided on what to get because i really want a red tail shark and they only grow like 5 or 6 inches at max,

would convicts get along with fire mouths ??

and the african cichlids?????????

its so hard to pick something somtimes

guys what if i get

2 angel fishes ??
i heard they are some type or related to cichlids too

2 angels
1 red tail shark
convicts with firemouths?

because im looking for the 2 angels to be the head of the tank i dont want all my fishes just hiding all day lol

If the angels are male and female you should be ok,but then if they breed, you won't want anything else in the tank.If they are the same sex, they will probably fight with each other.Angels are cichlids.
A 3 foot tank would be suitable for a single angel, and 1 or 2 dwarf cichlids. Then you could also add a small school of tetra or cherry barbs.

You could do the angels and some shoaling fish like dwarf rainbows or larger tetras, but don't mix them with the other cichlids as they are aggressive. As another option you could do a single pair of convicts (alone) in there, you could MAYBE add some dither fish as well. Red tail sharks are aggressive, I would not mix them with angels but you might be able to mix them with Convicts.
