Where do you go to find nice decorative and safe rocks for tanks? I need some for my planted tank and some nice big ones to make as homes for my big fish.

Landscape supply places or quarries if you feel you need to buy them. I find what I need in my travels. If you're convenient to the Phila PA area I know a great place to get black slate or shale (a geologist I ain't!) in pieces that range from gravel sized to you'd better bring a backhoe size.

down at the local river

Outside also has very competitive prices and great costumer service. If you have a problem with a rock purchased from outside, they will swap it out for one of equal or lower or greater value, free of charge, or you can return it for a full refund.

LFS is way overpriced.
Online, I don't know where to search for aquarium purposed rocks

Brandon,
OBVIOUSLY if there were rocks outside I would step outside. but i live in the city and there are no rocks around where I am. If I had rocks outside why would I make this thread?

Are there any specific rocks I should be aware of that might contaminate or not be good for my tank?

Make a day trip outside the city to find what you need. I went down to my backyard to cope out what I want. Actually found some eggs on the bottom of some in the water. What lays eggs now, its freezing outside

Lol sorry. Perhaps you can take a short trip to a river or somehwere outside the city. Or check out a landscaping place. If not I'd be happy to ship you some:) I live in the middle of no where so rocks are very available to me. Rocks not to use would be ones that fizz when you put a few drops of vinegar on it. I think certain sandstones or limestone will do this. I don't remember which kind of vinegar to use though. I'm sure someone else can chime in with some specifics.

Any vinegar will work but distilled white is the type most use. Sandstone won't fizz unless the sand it's made up of is limestone, but it does tend to deteriorate in aquaria.
