Unwelcome visitor

I had a redtailed hawk taking fish out of my pond on the deck. she would sit on chimmney and come down feet first into pond. Soon as I saw this I went and got a net to cover :(

Are you sure it wasn't an Osprey? Red-tailed hawks rarely if ever prey on fish.

Bald Eagles and Ospreys are basically piscivores by nature. I doubt a RedTail Hawk would eat fish. Be careful how you deal with them. The penalties for messing with a raptor are steep.

Did a lot of research and it was a juvanile (sp) red tail. I'm in farm country so def. no osprey. Hawk hung out in back yard for about a month before going after the fish. Prob. saw pond as water source as I heat over winter and movement of fish attracted her attention.

birds are extremely smart and can trouble shoot . i wou;ld put nothing by a hungary bird i once had a grackle that would fly into my fan duct over the stove slide the screen aside vary gently and if there was no motion in the kitchen he would help himself to whatever he could get if startled he would swoop back into the duct and be gone [ so we got a cat and that was that]

Hahahahahaha!

I have a video of a red tail hawk eating one of my koi - so the answer is yes. :irked: I thought he had caught one of the large minnows my sons had put in the pond so I wasn't too worried about it but when I went out later I realized that he had eaten one of my larger (8 - 9 inch) koi. Really bummed me out - the hawk came back several times. We shooed him off until he finally gave up.
