Here are a few shots of my new 55 gallon saltwater setup. This isn't my first as I had a 29 gallon reef about 12 years ago and had to give it up. But just a few questions as its been a while for me. The small brown anemone in the one pic I was told was a aptasia (I think i spelled it correctly) but anyhow it went from just 3 or 4 to about 7 now. The gentleman at my LFS said that they wouldn't really pose any problem but as I done a little more research as I have found you can never do enough of when it comes to owning a salt water tank of any kind, I found that they will quickly take over a tank and kill most any coral is this true??? and my second question is the one of the little starfish, these things are everywhere I think I counted 12 at least ranging from about 1/4 of an inch to about an inch and half in diameter. are these babies of some sort or just a really small species of sea star? So far everything is going great. all of the water perimeters are normal. any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aiptaisia are a PITA. Just to be sure, I'd try getting them out of there now before there are hundreds.

The little starfish are brittlestars, and they're good ones. You can consider them part of the cleanup crew. I've never had any problems with even bigger ones.

Yea I tried the shrimp method after reading about how the nudibanches will die off once its all gone.. so far its been really good results in fact I can't find any aiptasia now.

That does not look like aptasia to me. It could be a manjo nem which would need to be removed/killed as well. BUT it also looks like it could be a nem you might want to keep (maybe a small bubble tip). If so you got a real nice hitchhiker!!! Are there any more in the tank anywhere? If you touch it gently does it retract into a hole in the rock? If so it might be aptaisia.

Manjos and aptaisia nems spread pretty quick and keep in mind they might not pop up right next to each other. Aptasia is just one of those things that almost all reefers have to contend with. They will not do any major harm unless you allow them to spread and grow enough that they can reach corals. I do recommend getting them early before they grow/spread but I really don;t think that is what it is.

Here's a good pic of some aiptasia for reference.
