If you started a job that required you to be away from home Monday morning to Friday evening what would you do with your fish tanks?

[A] Give up your fish to good homes
Ask friends / family to feed and care for them during the week
[C] Hire a professional service to care for them during the week
[D] Put the fish on "autopilot" during the week (automated feeders / vacation feeders / etc.)

well some people would like to do certain things, but the options aren't available to them. why would you give your fish up if you were just out of town for the week?

That is a good question. I feel that if you were gone everyday during the week, that would leave you with only 2 days where you personally would be able to give the fish attention. Depending on how many tanks you had, you might be spending a good chunk of your weekend doing maintaince on the tanks and not enjoying them. I would adopt them out because if I was gone for that much time, I know I could not give them the attention that they deserved

funny that you ask this because i am about to start doing 1 week travel 1 week home...i am going to have family take care of the tank. if i were to be gone more i would adopt the tanks.* My problem is that i have a high tech, c02 injected, high light, co2, EI Ferts etc tank that i care for so i will need to train someone to take care of them properly. Daily pill boxes are goingto be key.

*If i lived with my GF, and will be in the near future, then this situation would change and she would gladly take care of the tanks for me so i would have the ability to enjoy them when i was home. This has been discussed.

Thanks for the feedback all! I'm asking b/c this is a situation I may come into at some point....:uhoh:

It really depends on the setups, and the estimated time with this job , how replaceable the fish are, other people in the household and the availibility of new homes..
Is this a temp job or a longterm job?. If this is planned to be a temp situation, then possibly ride it out. If it's planned to be long term, it may be better to attempt to re -home the fish. Of course if there are no new homes, this option may be eliminated.

How much attention do the setups require?, any special feeding or water requirements?, are these fish that have routine emergencies?. Fish that need specialized or emergency care are not going to last long when attention and care is reduced.

Are there other people in the household willing to do at least basic checks and call when something is wrong?.

This situation sounds a lot like boarding.
Given the experiences I have with boarding, I find it a compromised situation. especially if you live alone or nobody is checking on the fish care.
For boarding situations, you need good solid setups that are setup for low care.
You need to prevent emergencies from happening as much as possible. In the end you'll have to accept your fish will probably eventually be lost to something preventable because you were not home to correct it.

Also, if you will be at work more then home, why not move your tanks there where they'll get more attention?...Just a thought.

I was gone all last week and put my fish on Auto Pilot (The Wife) and nothing died luckily.
