just put some java moss on my new piece of driftwood.

i have it wedged in crevices in the wood right now (with the exception of once piece that is tied down and one that is held with gravel) and its all pretty secure.

just wondering how long i should expect it to take to attach itself onto the wood and start spreading?

Depends on a lot of factors, like light and ferts, but mine took about 3 months, with low light, ferts, and no CO2.

thats a beautiful setup u got goin there! nice piece of driftwood from those pics it looks like an enormous tank and huge tree-like piece of driftwood!?!

I would say a couple of weeks, but i would tie down all of it and keep the fishingline/string in the tank. Thats a really cool peice of wood there

thanks for the compliments on the wood. the piece is a large taproot (and other smaller roots twisted around it) from a medium sized pine tree. the tank is only 55 gallons and the wood is almost 4 feet long. the little stump on the right side would have been the only part of the tree above ground.

guess its just a waiting game with the java moss...

thought pine was not to be used in the aquaria because its not a hard wood

The only reason I know this is because I've read prior posts by dsaavedra: his tank isn't tropical; it is native north american fishes--that's why his avatar is a pumpkinseed (or some other sort of native sunfish). These fish grow best in the Southeast US, where the rivers and creeks are littered with pine stumps. They won't mind it a bit.

like bio said it really does depend on a lot of factors. it should be attached in a couple weeks. growth will depend on how much lighting you have.

Can you elaborate on the amount of light needed for java moss to grow well? I have had java moss for a few weeks (2-3) now with 2 watts per gallon (full spectrum). The moss is really growing and the lump is getting smaller and smaller as it's drifting away in the water. It has maintained a vibrant green color however..

I also had Christmas moss that seem to be dying away. I have java fern in my 10g tank, and that grows really well.

first off i wouldnt use pine in a tank. its gonna rot and soon. and the resins will mess things up. its a great lookin piece but really not suitable. as for the question a cple weeks to attach and it will grow fine. just my opinion using that wood is not a good idea
