Lighting Question

I am looking to purchase a new light for my 55 gallon planted tank. I have found what seems to be a good deal on a couple different light options, one is a 4 x 96 with lunars coralife aqualight plus for 250.00 and the other is a 4 x 65 coralife aqualight with lunars for 260.00. Wondering if the 4 x 96 would be too much light. The tank is not heavily planted but would like to keep the ones i have alive. Also have breeding angels in the tank and heard that lighting helps with them as well???????? Anyone with an opinion..

4x96w is way too much for the avg tank. i would run t5 ho over CF now days.

I have 2 54w T5HO (6.700 and 10.000K http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=16770) and 2 T8 15W
Zoo Med Ultra Sun Trichromatic (6.500K http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4489) for a total of 138W on my 55g. Everything is working fine for my plants, so far.

have to agree this is probably you pest bang for your buck out there. and it looked like thay might have upgades the designs of the light too

Mgamer20o0- Have you used the Fishneedit brand lighting yet? It's a great bargain bit it makes me wonder where the price difference lies.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I too am looking for a proper lighting setup for a 55 gallon tank. I like the Hagen Glo T5 HO double bulb setup but I really want individual on/off switches so I can stagger the lighting.

Any suggestions?

personally not yet. they resigned their lights and waiting for the 4x set ups to get back in stock. i know many people who have using them with out problem. they are not tek lights lets get this straight. they are not top end lights but you are not paying for top end lights with them. they are very good i plan to get some for my 120 soon. when the better light like tek lights run twice is much i really dont believe these are twice as good.

Are you sure the 4x96W would even fit over a 55? the 96W are over 30" long. Its way too much anyway. 4x65 is plenty, more than enough.

Its worth it to buy light fixtures with good reflectors. They make a big difference. I bought a cheapo light a couple years back 4x55W. I retrofitted it, adding AH supply reflectors and removed one bank of lights. I have to say I think I get almost as much light in the tank with 2x55 and good reflectors as I did with 4x55 originally. I prefer PC to HO T-5s.
