Covering filter intake for RCS?

That bad, huh? What are your recommendations for a better one? I don't think I'll be able to replace it until after the holidays, but I'll definitely look into it. The Topfin is relatively new, but I wouldn't mind replacing it, especially if it could be a hazard. I've been thinking of maybe getting a biowheel, or is there a better option?

A simple marineland or aquaclear or elite, one will do, they're pretty cheap and very reliable.

Awesome, I'm definitely ordering one of those. Thanks for the link!

And I'll check out filters at the LFS near my parent's house when I'm there for the holidays - DC area fish stores are so disappointing :(

Good luck!

I agree with a couple of others who already posted - Aquaclears are great HOB filters. The design makes it super easy to change out the media and you can adjust the flow to boot. I have an AC20 on one of my 10g tanks and a 30 on the other. The 20 is super quiet and the 30 is is pretty quiet. I'm in the process of replacing the top fin hob filter I have on my last 10g with another AC30 - just have to place the order :)

I'm not a fan of the marineland biowheel filters. I just threw out a Penguin 150 I bought not too long back because it was extremely loud and clogged regularly to the point where the biowheel would stop spinning (very bad!). It's also about twice as big as the AC30 for the same flow rate. I would honestly unplug the darn thing when taking calls while I was working from home - it was that loud.

I use tulle and a rubberband (or better yet a silicone band) to cover my filter intakes.

Where can I find black sponge prefilters? I have an HOB sponge on my intake. It's brownish yellow and so ugly. A black one would not be as obvious as this yellow thing is.

I got mine here. The work well and the shrimp are breeding even though they are fairly coarse. Stocking or net would clog the filter and cause problems for me.....

Make sure and order a couple. It saves on shipping and you will have a backup.
