ok, ive got a 38gal tank, 36"L x 12"W x 20"H.
my fish are:
3 colombian tetras
1 oto cat
1 angel
1 ruby shark
1 whiptail pleco
1 bristlenose pleco
1 clown pleco
1 blue acara

my filter is an ac110, and i do 30% water changes weekly.

plants are:
lots of cryptocoryne wendtii
some anubias nana
hornwort
a small java fern

i want to get two kinds of fish when i go to my lfs. heres what ive been looking at:

african brown knife or striped raphael catfish or Hypostomus punctatus.
AND
single blue gourami or blue gourami pair or 6 red eye tetras

i know the knife and catfish are predatory... would I be able to move the oto to a 5gal? the 5gal's already running with a dwarf gourami and mystery snail in it.

so, which two types of fish should i get?

Hehe I have to say striped raph. Thats my fave fresh water fish. All seem like decent choices if the oto was removed. Remember also red eyes can be fin nippy. And that would make me worryed about the angel. Also you have a few bottom dwellers now. Be careful that the Raph has his space as they can get a little nasty if they feel cramped for space on the bottom IME.

Also try to make sure the raph is a striped and not a faulse striped .. the size difference full grown is quite different as is Temperment IME.

This thread is making me miss my 220g Raph tank :(

A brown knife fish gets too big for the size tank you have, as does the Hypostomus punctatus. You'll never see the raphael catfish. You also already have a lot of bottom feeders and should not add more to this area.

You could get a gourami, but I think it would be better to get more of the fish you already have. Ottos like to be in groups and the tetras should be in a group of at least 6.

I heard blue gouramis can be very territorial depending on the individual fish's personality. I would just add more of the fish you have currently. Maybe some corydoras or more otos. Both like to be in groups of 5 or more. Good luck! :)

everytime i get otos they die for no reason. i had several about a year ago, and this is the only one that survived. the others died within weeks. as for the tetras, i do plan to fill out the school when i go to the lfs.

on MFK, i got the OK to add an abk or a hypostomus punctatus. im not discrediting you, im simply saying that i like getting multiple opinions... however, the pleco was iffy, so i definitely wont get that now. and, ill probably get the single blue gourami.

now its just between the raph and abk...

corys are an option. if i got them, i would go with emerald brochis cats...

im still leaning towards something big-ish.

More Colombian Tetras :) I would stick with the Angel as a centerpiece it will get big-ish given time.

Second !! As I said I would Pick the raph simply because it's my fave ... I think Petluvr is bang on !!

All those plecs really don't need a big Clumsy Cat in their way. Also as with all raphs ... Do you enjoy Replanting every morning?
