I'm beginning to think my goldies are frightened by my airstone. They swim to and tend to stay on the opposite side of my tank when it is on. Have any of you experienced this at all?

No, I haven't. None of my goldfish are afraid of the bubbles. I wonder if they never had such thing going on before you got them which might kinda explain why they appear to be distancing it.

Hi mx4ever,

My fish were scared of the airstone when I first put it in the tank too. They would freak out and eventually just stay away from it altogether.

To get them used to it, I had the stone in the water, but turned off for a few days. Then when it came time to turn on the bubbles, I reduced the airflow by making a small nick in the tubing. When they got used to this, I just cut off the damaged bit of the tubing so the airflow was back to normal. They now float over the bubbles after meal times and look for the bubbles when it's not turned on.

They will get used to it eventually.

When I had my goldfish they use to swim back and forth through the bubbles like it was a game. But Louiedee83 has a good idea, just reduce the air flow at first.

Goldfish contrary to the popular myth, have long memories and can be shy of new objects or tanks for several weeks. When I first upgraded to my 125 gallon for the fish they all hovered and moved in a little ball in one corner for over two weeks. Leave the bubbles on and just give them more time. Eventually they will grow used to it.

Goldfish do however sometimes have favorite sides of the take to rest in. It's generally an area where the flow of water is slower.

My goldfish can remember me by sight. They always come to the top of the tank when i get there because they think its feeding time. They're usually right too. They only come to the top for me. By me i mean my food.:D

My betta fish was terrified of his bubbler. He wouldn't go anywhere near it, and would flare at it when I turned it on.

what a good idea! I wish I'd thought of that- I just added an airstone to my community tank whenI upped the temp, and they were all freaked out at first. Now the kuhlis will swim into the bubbles and let themselves get blown around the tank.

They don't recognize you. They know that when they see an object above the water, they get food. Place an object similar to your size & color over the tank. They will swim to the top.

^ not true. I'm the only person that feeds my fish and most of the guys (brother, cousins) in the family are about my size and shape. They will follow me around and ignore the others. They will follow me around the 125 gallon tank top or bottom.

It kind of fun to walk back and forth in front of the tank and have the school following me.

Fish have excellent visual memories from all the studies that I've seen.
