my sister has a 5gal hex with a dwarf gourami and a mystery snail. would a sparkling gourami be able to go in there? if not, what could be added to the tank? its moderately planted with a small crypt and some hornwort.

I would think that the dwarf gourami would pick on the sparkling gourami, especially with a tank as small as a 5 gallon. Dwarf gourami tend to be rather territorial.

I'm not that I would add anything with a dwarf gourami and a mystery snail in a 5 gallon. I would do about 2.5 gallons for each of those since I'm assuming that by mystery snail you mean a Pomacea bridgesii, a type of apple snail. That's me though.

If it were a slightly larger tank I would suggest a school of pygmy cories, or even 2 female dwarf gourami if you can get your hands on them. Dwarf gourami really show interesting behavior when they are with their own kind.

Maybe some pygmy cories?

could work...

yes, its P. bridgesii. but the tank looks so empty.... and the DG looks so lonely.

That all depends on the temperament of the Dwarf kid and what you are wanting to put in with him. I think Lime is correct in what he is saying. I have a DG and a crowntail betta in a 5 gallon, however.... That was after a close and long time observation of how these two conducted themselves in community tanks. In my case, it turned out that each was miserable and afraid of the "Busy body" fish. I've had them in that for nearly a year with no issues.

I think a Cory might be a good idea if you put the snail into another tank. Or just leave it be.

Sparkling gouramis are more timid. In my book, the combination in a 5g is risky without the sparking gourami starving as a result of intimidation.

Thanks for your help everyone. We wont add fish.

But, afe there any inverts we could add?
