Suggestions for which canister?

I never use a spray bar , don't understand why so many people make it such an issue. I like more water movement in my tanks.

I use a c-220 and a c-360 on my 30 , had them for a few months and so far so good.

i dont like spray bars and prefer more current also. I usually ditch the spray bars maybe I should have saved them and passed them on to me they are a pain to clean and not worth the hassle.

Funny my c-160 put out very little in water movement until I went to the spray bar.

I use an adaptation of the Hamburg Mattenfilter for tank dividers in my bigger breeder tanks. I wonder how that might work. They're just a slab of foam, a lift tube or three, air stones and lines.

Matter of fact I think I'll pick up some more foam tomorrow and try one in one of the shrimp tanks.

Well, for me, I want the higher GPH, but less water movement/current because of the tank residents - hence a spray bar is a better deal for me. Guess it all depends on your needs.

Sounguru - good idea about placing it on the short side of the tank - will do that for sure, thanks!

If you want longer term low maintenance work horse cleaning with polishing a circumference style large surface area filter is the only way to go and since the FX5 is a little expensive ($225) and powerful (600 GPH) for what your looking for I can only recommend a Magnum 350 for true low maintenance workhorse (350 GPH) quiet operation. Because of its industry tested design its almost untouchable in performance to other filters in it GPH class and very affordable about $98 shipped.

Okay - I think I'm pretty well down to choosing between 2: a Rena XP2 or a Marineland C220. I like the idea of an Eheim but cannot afford, and I like the Sunsuns, but am thinking that for my very first canister ever, I'm probably better off with a "big" name so I can get help super easily if I need to etc.

The Renas I'm mostly reading good things except some people complain about noise (others says they're super quiet). But the Marineland, I continue to read, again and again, about leaks. I thought perhaps it was an old problem (manufacturing problem with the motorhead apparently), but some of those posts are fairly recent. So I have no idea what to do. Between these 2 filters, for those of you who've used both, what do you feel the differences are?

MsJ, I'd love to hear a bit more about the occlusion issue, if you would? That's a big one for me, too.

Thanks!

I just ordereed a Rena XP2 so I'll give you a review of that when I get it in a few days. It comes with a spray bar which is good. It gives a better spread of current. Plus, I might also get a powerhead, but most likely not if the spray bar is good enough.

What can't you afford? the 2215 is 95 dollars the XP2 is 116.00.
The XP series does not come with all media the 2215 does.

I will bet the 2215 will keep running long after both of those you are looking at stop working.
Classics are known to run for over 30 years and I believe the very first (same design) aquarium canister ever made.

I have two eheim 2217, one of the big Pro II (forget the model #) a fluval 404 and a sunsun. I have to say I would buy another sunsun in a second. My Eheims give me more trouble, I hate them. I am sorry I ever bought any of them. In my experience they are junk. The fluval I haven't had any trouble with, but at 3-4x the price of a sunsun when I don't see any difference in quality? What are you really paying for? I have only been running the sunsun for about a year, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. I can't comment on the marineland or XPs. I have never used either.

Make sure whey you shop for filters you consider the inflow/outflow and media that it does or does not come with- those mandatory accutriments can get very expensive. The sunsun inflow/outflow aren't really top quality plastics, but there is plenty of it to arrange your water flow in many different directions, and I am happy with it. Also, its black, so it blends into my backgrounds beautifully
