Magnum hot 250 question

buy a few extra micron carts so when you switch them out it just takes a few minutes and your back up and filtering. just bleach them overnight (the dirty carts) in a small bucket of light bleach water and rinse and dry and your ready for when you need to change them out again. the micron carts last a real long time if you clean them and take care of them.
i buy them everytime i find a good deal on them, someone told me that intex pools uses them in small swimming pool filters i am going to see if i can find the carts they use and if they are the same and what they sell for and give them a try.

Micron filters are the best thing EVER. only wish the 350 was quieter. And the media bags are wonderful cause that stuff gets stuck in those baskets real easy. And if you want to moderate between super clean water and a little longer service interval, fill the basket with pillow stuffing.
Actually instead of pillow stuffing use a layer of Poly quilt blanket under the blue bio filter by cutting an equal size length to the blue bio and then just placing it under the blue bio by turning both inside-out in one move and then holding both in position just slip both over the media basket like pulling a one-piece sweater over your head.

The results will be so good youll never use the blue bio alone again and polishes almost as good as the micron without clogging early. I use a Mag 250 with the micron cart as a supplemental filter to my FX5 & 350 I have set up with poly quilt, The poly quilt layer in circumference (never basket) does such a great job that the 250 micron just polishes and never seems to get dirty anymore now 4 weeks running clean and strong.

I have an aqua-Tech like you I use for growing house plants out of to help remove nitrates, I would still use it not replace it, however the mag 250 will be a big improvement in mechanical filtration.

One thing though the Mag 250 was made so compact that it really shines primarily using its micron filter for polishing as a back up for a much larger primary filter, how I use all 5 of mine. So what I am suggesting is that since you were considering buying the more expensive Mag 250 set up with the bio wheels, I recommend instead you use that intended money to buy the Mag 350 standard instead for about the same price.

The Mag 350 is a far more capable and flexible filter both for mechanical and bio filtration, but most importantly scalable to a larger aquarium up to 100 gallons as your tank size grows or decide to trade up or sell for a larger tank. Simone recently bought one here on this forum for their 29 gallon and loves the way it cleans. From experience I can tell you you will be much more pleased with it performance and potential for future larger tanks.

Sounds like good advice, however there isn't much space under the tank. Which was why I was thinking about the Hot 250. There is about 6" space on the shelf behind the tank. Would a 350 fit back there?

No. The Mag 350 is 6-3/4" but needs 7" in diameter and is 15" high counting the nozzles. The Mag 350 would not fit under my 60 aquarium either as it was too tall for any of the shelves underneath the cabinet. So I just traced an outline of it and cut a hole in the middle shelf so the Mag 350 could slide in and out at an angle for cleaning, the only part I have to remove is the canister body as the motor at the bottom stays behined so the Mag 350 is the lightest high capacity canister filter made. The cabinet doors hide the rest. See photo below if logged in.

Of course my second on is on the blind side of the tank & cabinet recently installed and loving the results as one can be used for polishing. Scintillating isn't it..LOL

I' got my last hot 250 and micron at petmountain. I usually use the $8 mircons filters as filler to get free shipping when I order other items. They clean up and are reused for years.

The ten 350's and three 250's in use are workhorses. To extend the life of either filter setup always have a pre-filter on the intake. Easy to clean before the weekly water changes.
