Okay first dead fish. Not due to water got up this am and my redtail shark was on the ground all dryed out . I have a tight fitting hood with only an 2 inch gap between hood and HOB filter. the shark was only 3 inches long are they capable of jumping with that accuracy

Anything's possible. If he jumped face up like most bottom dwelling catfish do, his head must have popped up out of the 2" gap.
Double check the water parameters, could be a reason he wanted out so badly.
One time my redtail jumped out the very very small gap at the back of my tank (about 1") Luckily, I was right there to save him but it taught me that no hole it too small for a red-tail. Sorry for your loss

.it was only a 26 gallon bowfront which again as i said many times i think ive been misinformed by petco as to being able to have it in that tank
Unfortunatly like already said they need atleast a 50 gallon tank. If you could, you should pick up some of the clear plastic guard to cover up that hole so you dont have any more suicides.
