How big can fancy goldfish get? Are there some breeds that grow smaller than others? I know that some grow quite large, but i came across this site and it seems to indicate that some grow 8 inches

Hello,
Orandas, ryukins, fantails, black moors/telescopes, lionheads and ranchus are the largest fancy variants you can find. 8 inches is exactly precise in reference to the above. Orandas by far are the largest fancies recorded at 10-12" being the average size for those with good genes and basic care provided. Some tend to be smaller however due to inadequate care provided by most owners. As a good general guideline, we recommend 10-15g per fish. Doesn't mean anything smaller than a 30g is quite appropriate.
So far, the smallest on record are Siamese dolls. These are very rare especially in the West. They gain a size of only 5 inches or less. I currently have one Siamese doll. It wasn't easy to find one and I had to look for it for months.

I'm not sure which fancies you like though. Which ones do you like? I'd keep 2-3 fancies in there on a permanent basis. The bigger the tank, the better for them, of course.
This is Li and Mei. Li, top, is 11+ inches. Mei, on the bottom, is now 12+ inches. A 30 gallon tank is about 36 1/4 x 12 5/8 x 16 3/4. Mei would barely have room to turn around. I just can't imagine three fish like this in a 30 gal.

I have and LOVE fancy goldfish, and I also have wondered if the sizes I've seen referred to (here and other places) includes the tail or not. Looking forward to reading the responses.

I know I'm dense! Do you mean the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail, or the tip of the nose to the start of the tail? Thanks!I would assume that for a fancy, the measurement goes from tip of nose to tail. If not, Kyryah has some darned BIGGGG goldfish
