Last week, I basically swapped the contents of my 5 and 10 gallons. That included catching and transferring my dozen or so RCS, including babies. I emptied the whole tank besides gravel, and caught as many as I could, and swapped them. I then took all the water out, turned over the gravel (had some algae) and added some more. I refilled, and added the new fish.

Just now, a week later, I saw a teeney baby RCS! I'm totally amazed that he survived, and also managed to stay away from the dwarf puffer, who has eaten every snail I had in there, even the bigger ones. Doing WCs tomorrow anyway, gonna see if I can catch him.

Amazing what critters can accidentally live through. I set up a new home for my betta one day, threw in a piece of driftwood from my big aquarium and planned on letting it settle in for a couple of days before transfering everything around. What do I find in the untreated, cold water? Baby briggs cruising around. Now if I had paid $25 for him, drip acclimated him for 24 hours and called in a specialist he would have died in the first hour. As it is, he wanted in there so bad, I let him stay.

There's more than 1! I see at least 2. Crazy. Not sure if I'm gonna be able to catch 'em, but if they lived this long, maybe they can survive til they're big enough to see and catch.

ETA: Does anyone know if DPs hunt by sight or smell? He definitely finds snails, and sometimes checks out the otos on the glass, I think he's checking if they're snails (he doesn't bother tham). And maybe the baby RCS are hard to see?

I think Dwarf Puffers hunt by sight. Check out their swiveling eyes when they start to go on a hunt. It is funny to watch them go crosseyed when they have found their victim. DPs all have different character traits. Some ppl say dont have DPs in a community tank because they will nip away at the fins of the other fish. My first two DP were in a 29G community tank and the only fish that did damage were the two tiger barbs that I rescued. But now I have a DP/Oto only tank. I have had dwarf shrimp with my DPs before and have not had a problem, and some people say that Amano shrimp do well with DP so maybe the RCS will survive. But with my newest batch of DPs I am not sure if they will co-habit the same tank with shrimp well.

turkey baster recovery seems in order here. Most useful tool in my kit I'd have to say.

Ha, didn't even think of that. I'll definitely try it.

Yeah, I do love to watch them hunt. Every time he thinks he sees a snail he does that whole tilt down at a 45 degree angle and get reeeeally close to see if it's edible or not.

The baby shrimp are about the same size as the frozen brine shrimp I feed him, so they must be really good at hiding!
