Hi Friends,

For the first time in my life, I saw a few External Filters for sale in my town...lol.. but I'm really excited and I guess I can try to buy one. The ones available are of the following Brands -

1. Dolphin
2. Sun-Sun

Both of the above are under 65 USD ( 3000 in my currency) and just wanted to request you friends to kindly guide me if anybody has ever used any of these brands's 'external' filters and if they are reliable. If yes, then which would be better.

Please guide me Friends - will be a great help...

Are these reliable - I really dont want to risk an external filter leaking and draining my tank, hence harming or killing the fish in the process...

Thanks again !
Regards and Care

Wow thanks a lot for sharing that link and review... Just one request - kindly let me know if the Sun-Sun filter comes with the disconnect valves, so that I dont have to carry the filter along with the hoses etc to the bathroom for maintainence...

Please guide me...

Yes but unlike some disconnect vales where you have two levers or movements to first shut the valves and then remove them, the sunsun vale block has just one lever that both disconnects the valve block and shut the valve block off simultaneously.

Hi there !

Kindly excuse my ignorance and for I'm not able to understand what that exactly means. Will be a great help if you can kindly guide me a little and explain on this...

I have an Eheim 2217 and it has 4 Disconnect Valves - that is 2 for each side (intake and outlet sides) - this makes it easy to just disconnect the valves and carry the filter to the sink...

Can the Sun-Sun also be disconnected in a similar fashion, thus enabling me to disconnect the filter from the hoses and carry just the Filter to the sink or do I have to disconnect everything and carry it along ? So does this mean that the Filter will have to be manually started ( siphoned ) each time after maintainence - whereas the eheim holds the siphon...

Kindly guide me a little on this...

BTW, I have 2 Eheim 2217s on this 212 Gallon tank and I want to add this one just for extra mechanical filtration or may be I can use it to hold the crushed coral pieces to buffer the water ( as this is a frontosa tank )

Please help me here and sorry if my question is a little dumb... thanks again for caring and for the kind help...

NO, the sunsun has no disconnect for the hoses. The only disconnecting that takes place is the valve block from the canister which is the black oval piece you see on the top of the white canister that has the two hoses. That black part pops out and simultaneously shuts off the water to both hoses when you lift up on the black beaver tail handle. So that entire black valve block with connected hoses is left dangling too & fro with the hoses while you carry the canister and lid to the bathtub for cleaning.

Incidentally, what model are they offering for that price the 4 basket 304?

Hi Sir,

Thank you so much for having patience with me and for guiding me so well... I guess then the filter should be easy to maintain, as the sink is very near my aquarium.

Sir, just wanted to request you for guidance on a few last things that I have in mind -

1. Are there any chances of leakage in this Filter - I mean are the joints and connection tight / sealed enough ? I'm just worried about water leaking and hence emptying the tank - eventually killing my fish - Kindly guide me Sir...

2. Sir, I plan to use this Filter as an additional Filter for mechanical filtration ( using only fine filter wool as media in all baskets ) or to contain pieces of dead / dried coral and shells to buffer the water. Will this filter be ok for this purpose sir ?

Kindly guide me...
Thanks a lot again for all the care and kindness...

IMHO the sunsun is a very decent and well thought out in-line basket canister for a clone. It has O-rings where they are needed and the baskets rims and basket flow in-flow pipe overlap from the motor head to the bottom by 1/2" to prevent bypass. Much better anti-bypass integrity then my Fluval 404 which actually has weep holes and gaps in the baskets to allow bypass.

The thing to remember and as mentioned in my review thread is to use a Q-tip with Vaseline to lubricate all the O-rings, the internal valve gates and swivels, the hose fittings that screw onto the hoses, and the basket rims. This so that they will work easier, seal better, last longer, and prevent the possibility of a forced break due to rough handling, never force a part if it is stiff always work it back and forth until if gives then clean and lubricate before next assembly.

When placing your media inside you will have to learn what works best for you but as a general rule I try and keep the top and bottom basket with porous media rings or carbon so that water flow at the two most critical ends has a chance to accumulate enter and exit the canister.

The center basket is where I place my polishing media starting with a cut-to-fit piece of blue bonded pad against the grate to prevent clogging and provide some rigidity against the bottom basket grate. Stacked on top of the blue bonded pad (2nd layer) I place and fill the basket with hand plucked and puffed Poly-wool instead of Poly-batten so that it (the Poly-wool) will filter effectively through and though without matting too early with heavy dirt on the surface only like Poly-batten has a tendency to do in baskets. Finally I finish off with a third layer of cut-to-fit blue bonded pad and compress the springy sandwich I have made with the top basket.

Your not really compressing that much Poly-wool between the two Blue bonded pads in the canter basket, just enough to prevent flapper bypass when water flow comes up from the bottom of each basket grate and tries to lift-float the media up and and out of the way to bypass to the next basket above (an inharent problem with all top motor in-line basket filters). If the water were traveling in the opposite direction down and pinning the media against the grates like in the FX5, this would not be a concern. Of course heavy rings and carbon are not an issue, only those baskets filled with lightweight media but especially those with only one pad inside that can be easily lifted and folded out of the way when water pressure lifts the pad off the grate from the bottom-up.

So if you do that and keep an eye on flow every water change as an indicator of early clogging and needed cleaning, this filter should provide very good filtration and certinly every bit as good as any of the big name brand inline basket canister filters, circumference style filters excluded of course.

Oh and to more directly answer your questions, the sunsun by designed has no more chance of leaking then any big name brands, however make sure you look for any obvious defects like a basket that didn't mold properly at the factory exc.. Keep all the packaging neat and your receipt for exchange should you find a defect.

Performance whether as a primary or secondary should be fine but I can only speak for the 302 which I think would be good to very-good for up to 75 gallons alone. I haven't set mine up for filtering yet even though I ran through test becasue Im waiting to refurbish my new/used CL 93 acrylic tank and stand. The Sunsun 302 will be augmenting a Magnum 350 & magnum 250 HOB on the new 93 long tank.

The FX5 and 80 tank will go to my mothers home I'm setting up for her and will be servicing every 3 weeks and need that ultra performance and reliability since her home is 300 miles away.
