So I have a spare 10g tank that is not in any use. Well today I went to my LFS to pick up a background for a different tank when I noticed they had some halfmoons and other bettas that really caught my eye. So I thought hey why don't I just use the 10g I have to get one.

But my question(s) is, whats the best type of set-up for a betta? Do they perfer fake plants or real plants? Do they like any other creatures that can be housed in a 10g? Hiding spots? If real plants is the way to go what kind of substrate should be used? Also food, pellets? Live?

a ten gal is fine for housing, dont have too strong of a filter current.
for tankmates it depends on your betta's attitude
substrate should probably be large enough that he cant swallow it.
yes they love live plants and lounge and hide in them.

and for food they enjoy live but i feed mine flake and pellet.

What are some good beginner plants that betta's like? I wasn't planning on running Co2.

i have java moss in mine with fake wide leaf silk plants... he likes to rest on the leaves and swim thru the moss..

add a few caves or tunnels as well.. the like a lot of stuff in their tank to explore and swim thru.. that also makes it possible to have tankmates (i have ghost shrimp.. looking to upgrade to amano's maybe next month) since they can hide if there is any aggression

java moss requires ZERO maintenance.. just dump them in there where it looks nice and forget about it... for java fern, more or less the same thing.. maybe a bit more care but not much..

Java moss is a great beginner plant. You could also try Amazon frogbit and guppy grass - hard to find at the store but easy to find at the Buy/Sell :)

I highly recommend live plants with bettas. They definitely seem to appreciate them, they rest in their leaves and seem to nestle in them.

Anubias are also great for bettas. All my fish like to lounge on top of the leaves or get some shade under them. It's a really easy plant to maintain too.

I agree with the plants mentioned, get some of those. Don't have too strong of a current, for tankmates you could maybe have some pygmy corys and shrimp or something. Depending on your Betta you could be able to have anything from a community setup to a tank for only the Betta.
