Hi.. I'm new to freshwater aquariums.
I recently purchased a 5g glass aqarium..
I'd like anyone's suggestions on what type of fish or ANYTHING to put in it.

I've been cycling it with 2 Zebra Danios for about a month. It's WELL planted.... java moss, java fern, anacharis, and some other plant .. not sure of the name. It's got a WONDERFUL filter.. But no heater.

The guy at the pet store told me 2 Zebras would be fine in there... which they are FOR NOW. But I've read so many things on here and all over the internet about them... and they need MORE than 5g and they should be together with at least 5 or 6 others. Sooo what do i do? And what do you suggested I put in this little tank of mine??

I absolotely love the Zebras... they Zip around ALL day and ALL night long. Lol

Oh yeah and I also have a mystery snail in there....

Welcome!

You do need a heater in that tank, but good news is 25-50 watt will do the trick. I suggest the tiny submersible type as they are easy to hide.

You could add one more zebra danio and that would be enough for them to be content schooling together. If you want more than three, you'd need to get a bigger tank.

29 or 30 gallon tanks are good tanks for smaller community fish.

You might also like a couple male Endler's liverbearers for your 5 gallon. They are pretty and stay small.

For 5 gallons with the snail already there I'd recommend some shrimp. It sounds like you prefer an active tank so maybe a small school of pygmy cories, or probably some shrimp. If you keep the danios then I would suggest upgrading to at least a 10. A used 10 is pretty inexpensive (and often free if you use craigslist), and your equipment should also work on it.

You could get some shrimp and endlers. Do you have a plan for the fry though? I would get something that wouldn't breed quite so much.

Or stick with males. :)

Personally, I love a betta in a 5 gal tank with a couple of snails and/or shrimp (depending on the betta's personality - some will tolerate the company and others won't).

Well-planted is great. Most fish will thoroughly enjoy a planted tank. My betta will lie for hours in the giant java moss plant that I have growing in my 5 gal. :) He's lazy for sure.

That's a good idea about the males, didn't think of that! I agree with the Betta, I think I'd like that better than endlers anyways. Some will do fine with shrimp.

Here it is...

Tell me what you think... even if you think it's crap!

It's got 2 snails and 2 Zebras.
