Is this what I think it is? Uh-oh!

I have had these same two gold Vail Angles I bought from P-smart a year ago becasue they were the only ones in the Angel display tank did not have torn-up fins. Even so these two took out my marble angels and now one of them is guarding what I believe to be eggs.

If so what should I do? I already have plenty of plant cover so the fry should be OK right? There are 4 other large silver dollars, some neon's, a Gobi Dragon, and one Bumblebee behind a corner tank separator wide enough for fry to pass through. All in a 120 tall tank.
Below photo's are grainy due to evening low light flash, but what you see is the angle guarding some egg looking bubbles stuck to my FX5 intake tube, and the bottom photo at max zoom of what looks like eggs on the intake hose, or are they parasites?.

Congratulations! *doing the egg-shaker dance* :D

To answer your questions; how long ago were these eggs laid? You will want to wait a day to make sure the eggs are fertile first. Assuming that this is the Marbles first spawn; don't be too disappointed if it fails. Spawning/fry raising takes practice. Most often, first spawns are usually a fail where mother or father angel eats the egg and/or fry. There are numerous reports of Angel pairs raising their young. I have my fingers crossed for your success. How exciting! :)

P.S. If the fry are successfully hatched and the parents are willing to raise them, I think the fry should be okay. Mommy and Daddy Angel should be able to keep the fry in check and try to guide them away from going through the separator. Experienced Angel parents are very defensive and know how to guard their young. ;)

But my PH is way too high (7.8), my water too hard (400 GH), and my TDS too high (850) for them to lay eggs. Maybe they wont spawn or fertilize them or not hatch after all, right?

Fish are amazing creatures. They have the great ability to acclimate and accomodate to various environments. I wouldn't say they won't spawn, fertilize, or hatch because of your conditions. Obviously they are happy with the conditions you are able to provide for them to be laying for you so unexpectedly. :) In my opinion, wait it out. If the eggs turn white -- they're infertile. If you start seeing eyes and movement -- you might have yourself some fertile babies.

Way To Go Gunner!

Thanks. Wierd, my water is super non-tox and clean but the parameters should not allow this, not that I'm complaining just seem strange as most people have told me I shouldn't even keep angles with my local well water conditions.

Well the surprise might be premature, one thing is sure they like guarding them, at least the one that was would not leave the eggs for more then a few inches. I had to use floating flake to get food above the guard so he/she would eat. Im actually surprise the 4 large Silver dollars haven seen or eaten them as they are always hungry and nor picky eaters.

I see you have proven that angels can and will spawn in hard water. ;)

gunner FYI, I have seen successful spawn in these conditions.

time will tell.

Those eggs look viable to me! Congrats :)

When they are translucent and amber colored like that, they are still good, when they are opaque and white they have fungused; if so, try to remove the fungused ones lest it spread and starts contaminating the others. I bet since they are on a sponge filter, they are getting plenty of water passing through them which is great.

Incidentally, that's why cichlids "fan" their eggs...for water circulation.
