My brother in law just ordered a diatom filter for his 15 gallon tank. I had to google it, I had never heard of those filters before. Anyone here use one? Are they any good??

Vortex Diatom..top notch for water clarification or polishing..but not as a day to day filter.

I use a System 1 Diatom. Sit on the shelf most of the time but when it's needed it does a good job. It's use for water polishing, removes parasites, floating bacteria/ algae...

Only use for a few hours at a time.

I had one of those nearly 20 yrs ago and it did an amazing job at polishing the water. Like Bob said, it's good for a few hours until it clogs and needs cleaning. Definitely not a 24/7 filter.

i have 2 system 1's excellent filters

Used to work at a LFS as a kid, and we moved the diatom filter from tank to tank to do clean-ups. My thought might be overkill for a 15 gallon for the amount of time you'll really be able to use it.

To me a diatom filter on a 15g is an overkill but it's his money:-) I used a Vortex and sold it because I rarely used it. "Purigen" polishes water as good as a diatom filter IME.

IMO, a HOT Magnum (which can be used as a diatom filter) or a UV sterilizer is a better investment because they are versatile. You've got to see the power of UV + Purigen. Water looks like liquid air.

I positively, absolutely, undeniably and reliably, most sincerely concur...

VERY interesting... I will be checking out the purigen and uv for sure. Thanks everyone so much.

Ok, I have a question. I l looked it up online and can only find Purigen media. Is Purigen not also a filter? How do you use it?
