I'm scheduled to go into surgery on March 10th. I admit to being nervous and freaked out. I've never had surgery before.

Anyone have this procedure done?

What kind of hernia? What type of anesthesia are you having? Are you healthy otherwise?

Don't worry unless the doctor says "OOPS!" I just went thru a very major surgery and I am doing well. It's not bad until things start healing and boy do they ITCH!!! and you don't dare scratch or rub them!

Make sure you follow the doctor's instruction to the letter, especially NO LIFTING!

'Tis a groin hernia. I wasn't told any sort of anesthesia details.
They insist I'm otherwise healthy, even though I had what was classified as a very minor heart attack in December of '08 with the only apparent explanation being a random spasm in my artery. So even though my heart is in perfect health, I still get nervous with every little flutter in my chest!

Never had that operation, but have had two back surguries. Ask about what anesthesia will be used and it's side effects. Same for any pain killers...had some that...ermmm....stopped the system up for a few days.

Definitely ask about side effects if it's a med you've never had before. Opiates do cause a lot of constipation (Immodium is an opioid type compound) so you may want to use a stool softener/mild laxative as prophylaxis. You can ask your pharmacist when you get the scripts filled.

It is very likely the hosp will give you stool softeners as part of your follow-up care. They will likely also keep you in until you have a bowel movement.
