Would this work well as bio-media?

So I ordered a canister filter (Sunsun brand) and it is my understanding that it does not come with much media. I am short on money so I don't have much of a filter media budget. I do have some ceramic rings but not enough.

I have had these building block type things for many many years now and recently I have been wondering if they have the potential to be used as bio-media.

The building blocks are made entirely out of plastic.

The building blocks are covered in little (for lack of a better word) "rods" that stick out from the main blocks (this is what allows them to stick together for building), similar to the "rods" that stick out from a Coralife bio-ball. Each "rod" sticks out a little over half a centimeter. The "rods" are about 3 millimeters apart.

But enough descriptions here are some pics (click on the image to see more detail):

I have different shape variations of the building blocks as well.

So would this work as bio-media in addition to my ceramic rings in the canister filter I am getting?

Do not see why not...but some scrubbis from the local Dollar sture would suffice as weel.

Yeah I am planning on getting some scrubbies too.

if it were me i'd be building little caves out of those instead of cramming them in the filter, lol. but they would work fine for biomedia i think.

I wouldn't use them, but if you're in a jam, Just be careful to put them paralell with the water flow inside the filter - so the solid center piece doesn't block the flow of water or put undue strain on the pump. hate to see you burn out a canister that cost you a hundred bucks over a couple dollars worth of media.

What do you have as mechanical filtration?

The canister filter comes with some floss pads.

I am also going to put some pot scrubbers in the bottom basked to act as coarse mechanical as well as biological.

dollar stores carry some great stuff you can use in aquariums and filters mine has about a 8 ft section of plants nets food decorations bubblers tubing as well as the scrubbies. i buy alot of stuff there cant beat the price.
