Rescue Bettas - Long story...no real point but there are pics

Just thought I'd share the story of my temporary rescue bettas. I recently started a 56 gallon tall aquarium and decided that I needed a quarantine tank. A 10 gallon would do. I looked on craigslist and found that someone was selling a 10 gallon with hood, light, filter, decor, and two bettas for $25. Yes, the bettas, both male, were housed together with no divider. However, in the post the seller made a point to say that he knew they shouldn't be together but these two seemed to get along.

So I contacted the seller and made arrangements to pick them up. I got there and was shocked to find that the water was yellow, the surface of the water had maybe 5 pinches of betta pellets floating on it, and the filter had no media in it even though it was running! :thud: The poor little guys were in there looking wilted with fins all closed and barely floating...thankfully upright. I didn't bother to explain the horrible situation these guys were in to the seemingly 18 yr old because he had no other fish or aquariums.

I rushed them home and put them in clean water together and then emptied the awful smelling 10 gallon. Once in clean water, they started to perk up...and flaring at each other. Hmmm...I thought he said they got along great. I seperated them.

By the next day, they were more comfortable. They were swimming and eating and opening their fins. :( Again I was sad to find out that they, in fact, did not get along when he put them together and both fish had ripped up fins. Thankfully neither have damage to their bodies nor apparent illnesses. But below are the pictures of them now in my care. I don't plan to keep them. I will be giving them away to willing coworkers, but wanted to keep them for a bit to make sure they were fine. Their fins seem to be growing back now and they seem to be active, begging for food, flaring at their reflections and other fish, eating, and making bubble nests :y220e:

aaww good for you! you gave these guys a nice new home and a new life!
btw i like the orange one :)
hopefully they recover without illness!good luck!

Very good! Next time be careful though because fish can die from the sudden transition from dirty water to clean water. Do daily partial water changes instead.

Wow.... so sad to hear what they were living in! Poor little guys..

I hope they heal nicely... and good for you for saving them!!! =)

I have a betta that got pretty nipped up by her tankmates, but after rescuing her, she healed in record time with just high temp and salt... back fin healed from shredded to lovely and moon shaped in almost 2 weeks! I have high hopes for your little guys!

I will try to do that in the future. I was aware of this, but I was just so grossed out by the nasty water. It smelled really bad too. I just didn't want to keep any of it anywhere.

Good for you! They must be so much happier in proper tanks.

lol. I think we should all take bets on whether this will happen :evil_lol:

My bet is that you get attached to them and keep them :D

Hahaha. No, I really want to give them away. I may have roomates moving in soon and trying to minimize on tanks until its all done.

However, I'm sad to report that the pink one has developed two spots of white fluff on his face that I think is fungus. They are small and hard to see, but one is protruding from his head, so I think its fungus. Its too large to be ich and not as bright white. I'm still trying to decide what to do about it. I'm sad about this :( I don't want to give him away sick, so I guess he'll be staying with me for awhile longer.

I am trying to make arrangements for a coworker to come pick up the blue and red guy. So I don't have to bag him and bring him to work just for him to sit in the bag all day long.

If it's stringy and white, it could be columnaris, which many people mistake for fungus. I always have a hard time telling them apart.

Anyway, they are beautiful bettas, and you must be a very special person to rescue them! :)

great save...good luck in nursing them back to health......they look colorful...
