overflow failure?

On the u-tube style overflows, I have found that the water flows through the tube with enough velocity that any air bubbles that enter get washed straight through. This has not been the case with the CPR-style overflows (a full-width siphon chamber rather than a discrete u-tube), and I did need an aqualifter or powerhead w/ venturi to constantly suck air of of those designs.

I would isolate the pump for water volume then use the switch to turn pump off so it will not get damaged.

Could you recommend a source for float switches and/or instructions for their use? There are so many different kinds, I really don't know what to look for.

i put a nipple on all my over flow tubes and hook them up to a aqua lifter pump so no air will build up in the tube and break the syphon. i been doing this for several years and never had a flood or lost syphon.

This is a u-tube design, so I think I'll test it without a separate pump and see how it goes.

Thank you all so much!

Sorry but no I have not checked into float switches yet. The pump is a small desk top fountain pump that can be replaced for under 10 bucks so have not worried about it yet.

When I scale the filter up to tanks larger than the 3gl the pumps will become costly enough that I figured it would be worth looking onto the extra cost then to protect the investment.

The overflow weir is typically designed to have a capacity of like 10 times the pump capacity and to have sufficient "head space" for overflow if the water surface in the tank rises.

I'm afraid I didn't quite follow that, but with the "chill pill" quote, I'm guessing you're telling me to relax. :P

can't break siphon if there isn't one. little bit louder than some other overflows, but it doesn't bother me.
