I have 6 emperor tetras in my 55 gallon tank, 1 male and 5 females. They've been in the tank about a week, and the male is turning into a tyrant. He is shredding the fins of the females, and is showing VERY intense color. He's taken up residence in the far right corner of the tank in a stand of wisteria. I know that these fish are pushier, and territorial. I was not expecting him to beat up his females. What would be the best course of action to correct this?

The only other fish in the tank are 3 ancistrus.

Do i add more emperor females? or more of another fish, like the cardinals I was planning to add?

Maybe a couple more males??

I've never heard of Emperors being that aggressive. I would think he'd be trying to mate with the others, not chase them away from his territory.

?? That is strange. I use to have a school of Emperors in my 100 and never had a problem. Had about 12 mix between males and females. Had them for years.

That's strange. My black skirts kicked out an 'outcast' of the shoal, but there was an equal number of males and females. Your's probably just wants to breed. If he has good color, they will probably spawn soon.
