I have had my 10 gallon tank for 6 weeks now, and 4 of those weeks with an amano shrimp. The ammonia levels are still off the chart, I guess my nitrogen cycle has not completed yet. They have been off the chart for the past 4 weeks. Despite that, my shrimp is surviving. How is this possible considering what I have read regarding their sensitivity to ammonia?

The tests are being done with liquid droppers.

Liquid. I have gone to two different pet stores to get my water tested on the same day to ensure accuracy. This is frustrating, as I am waiting to stock my tank. As of now, I have a cory and two tetras.

I would do a large water change NOW, not just for the shrimp but for the fish too.

A water change will not negatively affect the cycle.

I would keep doing water changes to keep the ammonia and then the nitrite levels below .25 ppm.

what kind of filetr do u use?
sound weird for a 6week old tank. the cycle shoud be finished in 4 weeks or so.
do u have nitrate in the tank? this will indicate that the amonia breaking bacteria is working...

Inverts (shrimp and crayfish) are really only super vulnerable when they molt (shed their exoskeleton). A big water change would be helpful if they need to grow and shed the exoskeleton for now.

I am using bio wheel for 20 gallons on my 10 gallon. I even added a sponge filter in addition to that, which has been running for 2 weeks now. No, there is no nitrate. But there is some nitrite (I don’t recall how much).
