I have a powerhead in my planted tank, sole purpose is to provide extra current/water movement (distributing fert and nutrient for plants).

Can/should I turn it off at night? so that the fish can rest more (don't have to swim because of current), and also save $10 in electric bill per year as a side benefit?

I say do it. $10 a year could buy you a FEAST at McDonalds every thanks giving!!!

I'd say don't. Circulation is more important at night when plants are net users of oxygen along with the fish.

If you're worried about operating costs, get a Koralia. Very efficient...

I agree, don't turn the powerhead off. Fish don't need still waters to rest, they just like their environment to be stable - and unless your powerhead is packing a real wallop, it's probably not bothering them a bit, just adding more beneficial gaseous exchange at the surface.

Also, I don't think it's very good for this sort of equipment, which is meant to continually run, to turn off and on every day. It seems like it would wear it out faster, although I don't know this for sure.

Keep it on.

you guys are missing the important part here...McDonald's!!!!!!!!!
