I know there is putty made especially for aquariums but (to me) it seems expensive considering how much I'm going to need.

I plan on making a bottom to my tank to keep my driftwood "forest" in place.

The layer will be thin and only cover half of my standard sized 10 g tank, both length and width.

Any suggestions on a putty, clay or anything that will be cheap?

we need pics but i would just mount the drift wood on rocks. im not sure this is what you are talking about. more explanation and pics

Hmm ... no pics yet.

I'm just gunna stick the pieces of driftwood (basically twigs) in the putty and let it cure.

I need them to stand up straight ... like trees.

why not silicone? also, im not sure if its a good idea or not, but why not a stainless steal screw? the driftwood at the lfs is slate + wood screwed together.

For what you want and considering the size of what you want to bond, I would use 100% silicone that does not contain any bacterial inhibitors. I don't think you need the "putty"( if it's the green/white stuff that turns grey when blended). I have used both and silicone can bond some pretty heavy heavy pieces of rock together. So just go and get some silicone from the hardware store and save some money.

I would use Harveys plumbers epoxy putty. I used the stuff from home depot in a reef tank when I fraged corals. It comes in a stick and you cut off what you want and nead it together. Also bond it to some slate so you can move it around and your gravel will hold it in place. It is around 4 bucks.
