Homemade foods for a 5 month old Oscar.

in the past year and some my oscar has gone from just under 3 inches to nearly 11 inches (including tail fin) on mainly frozen foods, supplemented with pellets and flakes/crisps. i've just recently tried feeding silversides and he loves them.

When I had my oscar, he loved the silversides, shrimp, scallops, frozen fish, beefheart, earthworms, livefeeders, blanched zucchini, ...pretty much everything I feed him!

Just be sure to feed a variety to them, mine seemed to get bored with things if I feed to often. Be careful with live feeders I wouldn't feed them to much, more as a "treat" from time to time and be sure to quarantine them for about 2weeks before feeding them .

As far as insects from around the house, I wouldn't...you have no idea where they have been and what they have been exposed to.

Good luck with your O they are such fun fish to have!!!

I feed my Oscar red hikari pellets, shrimp, plankton, earth worms, crikets, different kinds of fruit and veggies. I have a tank of guppys and I feed her the fry, those quick breeding little freaks, she loves them:grinyes:

Oscars, you just have to love them.

I would feed my Oscars beef heart, at least 2 days a week. This promotes very rapid development and growth. Earthworms are great. I would raise maggots for live food and even purchase fishing minnows and feed to them. The bait store would love me taking all their runt minnows off their hands. I would also feed flakes and pellets to provide them a balanced diet.

I never found them to be very picky eaters.

I've had my 2 oscars for about 7 weeks, 1"when i got them and they are both over 4"
Thay do have a massive 6' tank to play in though.
Start an Earthworm farm my guys love them and they are very good for them.
Stay away from feeders!!
I am feeding 4 times daily atm but not large amounts. Thawed bloodworms and cichilid gold petts mixed together and a couple of earthworms every few days
